View Full Version : I'm a Christian and I don't hate homosexuals :)

Ok, judging by the usual quality of discourse about religion on the internet this won't turn out well but I want to at least get it out there that the media very often highlights a small proportion of Christians who I believe don't fully understand the bible. Also, I hate referring to people who are homosexuals using the term 'homosexual' as to me it feels depersonalised but I can't think of a better word at the moment. Sorry if it gets anyone cut!
Pretty much:
While homosexuality is a sin, so are many other things that people do. I'm straight, but that doesn't mean I don't sin. Eg. I lust over girls (pretty much part of being a straight guy!), I lie, etc. The bible says 'all have sinned' so really, homosexuals are no different to anyone else on the planet! Christians are called to love EVERYONE equally, which is not what some of us are doing! If anyone here has felt hurt by a Christian at any point in time I want to personally say sorry and remind you that while Christians try to live perfect lives, we DEFINITELY don't succeed. That's the great thing about being a Christian, we believe we aren't judged on our actions but on our faith :)
What the bible says about marriage, is that it's a gift given by God as the union of a man and a woman with him at its centre. Because of this, gay marriage in the eyes of the bible is not right. BUT to me, today 'marriage' in the eyes of society is not religious, but simply a 'relationship status' if you will. I would say that even a heterosexual couple who aren't Christians will not be married in God's eyes. So then, in our secular society today, gay marriage should be legal as it doesn't hold a religious meaning to society. Although I think ministers and leaders of other religions should have to right to not marry a homosexual couple.
Sorry this was long, I hope you read the whole thing but understand if you didn't. Just remember, God loves you all no matter what your sexuality or your past. That means YOU :)

Im also a straight Christian and have a few homosexual friends. The adults at our church tell us that it is wrong to be gay but I dont think lowly of gays at all. Sometimes I get scared that if I keep accepting gay people as friends i'll go to Hell, but honestly I cant bring myself to tell anyone that their sexual preference is wrong and im not going to stop being friends with them. Some gays I know are even better all-around than most straight people would ever be.

I agree with your thoughts on marriage today being a more relationship status/legal term then a religious one. The main thing I have against super orthodox bible quoting gay bashing Christians is Luke 6:37 "Do not judge, and you will not be judged; and do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; pardon, and you will be pardoned"

That was a very well thought out post. I have a lot of respect for your point. After all, Jesus said, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." Kudos from a homo!

You would definitely not go to hell for being friends with gay people. Jesus said love everyone, regardless of who they are, what they do etc. Good job! :)

Well Chris, that's good to hear. Because it bothers me if someone were to hate me over something I had no control over.
It would be like someone hating me for being left-handed, I had no control over that either.

Haha, just remember that we're all flawed. That's why we need God. No point being a Christian if you're perfect :P

In my belief it just doesnt make sense that god could hate gays because we are all his children and there is no fathomable way that He could hate his children.

I'm a bi Christian. I don't believe that it is a sin. God loves us anyway we are. That's what the Bible says.
And I know you aren't aiming to be rude about it! XD

Personally I think homosexual men are okay and I am a christian also. The bible says the act of having homosexual sex is a sin. It says nothing about 2 females being lesbians so I believe that is ok in the eyes of God.

You're right, he definitely doesn't hate them :)

I believe it is a sin, just like lying and lusting (please don't hear me saying you're a bad person, that's not what I'm saying at all). It's no worse than anything else. But yes, I believe God loves us no matter what :)

The bible does say that homosexuality in general is a sin, so yeah lesbianism is the same. BUT it's no worse than any other sin. No worse than me lying or lusting or anything.
I guess it's just important to remember that we're all sinful in different ways, doesn't matter if you're gay or straight, we all do things wrong. It's God's love that saves us, not our sexual orientation :)

I think homosexuality is a sin, however it is no different than adultery, incest, or having sex outside of marriage. And we all have sinned, I am just as guilty as everybody else.
I treat all the gay people I know with the same respect as everybody else. But I do resent the ones that are in your face and shove their ways down your throat, and say that I am a "Hater" because I may not think the same way they do. I am entitled to my opinion no differently than they are to theirs.

Homosexuality was and is not a sin but Christian leaders believe it should be so they misinform the public

I so love this,Christians is Luke 6:37 "Do not judge, and you will not be judged; and do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; pardon, and you will be pardoned". It's just like the golden rule,"Do unto others what you want them to do unto you." Keep the thought.

It's clearly stated in the bible that it is a sin, there's no argument against that. BUT it's not like a 'worse' sin or something. It's just a normal sin.

You should explain your way of thinking to one of my friends. He's a serious churchgoer (at least 3 times per week), his father is something of an elder in his church and thus by way of his upbringing, he is completely and absolutely homophobic. We have discussed it before but it doesn't often come up or end well. Ironically, apart from that he seems to be quite an accepting person with strong anti-racist sentiments.

This makes me feel better I guess. I was a bisexual catholic until I changed my religion to paganism. I felt like I was being judged for who I was, and I thought that was wrong. But thanks for the "Christians don't hate you speech".

Passage?
'9 Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men[a] 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.'
1 Corinthians 6:9-11 :)
Navy, no problem :) I guess you might have felt that because (in general) I think Catholics are more conservative and resistant to change than other Christians. It's a struggle to show that God loves someone but also at the same time say that something that they're doing is a sin. It's important to remember God loves everyone no matter what :)

You sucked the wrong thumb dangit, go to hell!
Lol in all honesty, the christians who are here to judge and discriminate have already sinned by doing so. Many of my closest friends are atheists, gays and lesbians and I certainly don't have a problem!

No one is going to believe me, but the Bible has actually been mistranslated over the many years of it's existnce. I had to do report on it. I can find sources if you like.
Also, the same book says that it's illegal to eat shrimp, wear polyester, shave, divorce, eat bacon... etc.
It also says that if we disobey our parents, then we have to be stoned at the edge of town...
Do you still believe the bible word for word?

I believe the bible. BUT. Those old laws were for the Jewish people before Jesus came. (Also, how could they have worn polyester anyway? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't polyester a synthetic polymer? How would they have made it, or known what it was?)
Those laws applied to the Jewish people. They were very contextual. And you'll find that they were allowed to shave, and that some of the laws were actually kinda just good hygiene to protect the jews against disease.
