I've been overweight since I was a little kid. I absolutely hated being outside, especially in the summer. Sadly, that hasn't changed much. While I do enjoy being outside now, at this point in the year it's extremely hot where I live (damn you, Alabama heat!).

I wanted to get lap-band surgery before returning to school in August, as I thought that it was the only way that I could lose weight. Well, my insurance company is being difficult and won't let me go to the doctor until after the first of August. I was furious when I found out. I wanted to return to school as a new me.

After a few hours of contemplation, I decided that I was going to try to lose weight the old fashioned way: By appetite control and exercise. I've composed a list to go by of what I can and cannot eat. I wanted to make sure than I have my meal plan down before I commit to any hardcore work-out routine. As you can work out as much as you want, but if you still eat a lot then it wont work.

I'm well aware that you need your metabolism up in order to do any real good. And that dieting can lower it. I've looked up ways to boost your metabolism, and have come up with positive and easy results to go by. I eat plenty of meat, all I need to do is switch a few of them out. I also read that building muscle mass helps out greatly as well.

While genetics have contributed to my being overweight, they also grant me with the gift of easily building muscle. So I guess my question would be: Since I can't afford a gym membership what weights would be good to start out with? How heavy should they be? I'm slightly stronger than the average teen girl if that helps any.

And before you guys go on about telling me the different way I can lose weight, I've already looked them all up. I've even got some diet pills to help curb my appetite.

Sorry for the long post, and all of the rambling. I REALLY appreciate any help you guys can give. Thanks!

Diet and exercise play a major role in your metabolism; but a healthy, regular sleep schedule is just as important! Make sure that you're getting enough sleep every night, and try to stay on a normal or regular pattern. Try to go to bed around the same time every night and try to wake up around the same time. It doesn't need to be any extreme time - or the same time to the minute - but try to stay in the same vicinities with when you go to bed and when you wake up in the morning along with a decent number of hours.

Well, for me I have always been told I have a ridiculously fast metabolism. So, I personally think the key is a combination of your diet schedule and exercise. I always eat fairly small portions of food over the day, but in many meals. Also, I am never hungry during breakfast, so I usually just eat something very small and take my vitamins so I won't start the day malnourished, obviously. This is just how my body is, but I am sure if you're overweight you can adapt to a different diet routine.

Also, short bouts of exercise (running up/down stairs, whatever else), help a lot also.

I have a similar problem too. When you say snacking throughout the day, does the oft-cited rule of no eating after 9 pm apply?

Metabolism is hard to change. It's generally just a thing you're born with, you get it from your parents or grandparents.
Try not to sleep after eating, after all, that's how sumo wrestlers gain weight! However, I have a very fast metabolism, I'm hungry all the time too when I get home from school I eat a packet of biscuits even though I'm almost underweight!
And also do light exercise and eat early.
