Lucid dreaming is safe, but it requires a lot of training and work before it can be performed. You need to work out what your dreams are telling you, go over them and look into your subconcious, as well as also having a good sleep pattern. There is actually a video on youtube explaining this, have a look:

Come to think of this, during my past year in year 11, I've experienced a couple of lucid dreams, where I experienced what could of happened if I did something, such as telling one of my friends a secret, then watching the series of events from start to finish. One time, it was like in the video, where i went back to sleep after waking up early, then lucid dreamt (dreamed?). But I woke up a couple of hours after because of school, and forgot what happened in the next half hour.

Lucid dreaming is fine, but never do sleep paralysis to get there. Sleep Paralysis is almost always scary. It feels like you have a lead blanket over you and you often see scary thing, they move and everything. You might hear footsteps outside your door and a scary looking thing will walk into your room and just do something like grab you or something, and you can't scream or anything since you are in sleep paralysis, which is when your body enters REM while your mind is still awake. The youtube video that Shadow posted above seems fine and it doesn't involve sleep paralysis, so feel free to try that out!
