Apple is to launch a smaller, cheaper version of its iPad tablet this autumn, according to sources within the Far Eastern factories that supply the technology giant.
The new machine will be less than 8 inches across the diagonal - considerably smaller than the current 9.7-inch model.
It will also be cheaper, to compete with rivals such as Google's £159 Nexus 7.
The unnamed sources in Apple's supply chain said that the launch is 'very near'.

So wait,

It's bigger than the iPod touch,
and smaller than the iPad.

This is essentially the Apple's version of the Samsung Galaxy Note.

Eh, more like the Amazon Kindle Fire. Or the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

iPod Touch --> iPad Mini ---> iPad

and...

Galaxy S Wifi ---> Galaxy Tab ---> Galaxy Tab 10.1

Yeah. All I can say is patent wars. FML.

Interesting. Apple earlier (I think Steve jobs) said that small tablets were stupid and ridiculed the amazon kindle fire for being small. Now they are making one about the same size!

I don't really see what the big fuss is about all of these companies doing things like this. Everybody rips off everything everywhere you go. You see it in music, technology, cars, writing, movies, fashion, everywhere. I think everybody just needs to get over it a bit; just get what you like and accept the fact that nobody is ever going to stop ripping anybody off.

Even before Steve Jobs passed, there were rumours of an "iPad Mini" however Jobs did not like the idea of a mini version and thus none was produced. Now that he is gone, I doubt that Apple would go against that to produce a smaller version. Aside from that, I don't see how the Mini version would bring in any more revenue. The 9.7" current iPad is bringing in money for Apple but I think the Mini would cut that in half. Just my thoughts. Could be wrong, could be right. Who ever knows for sure with Apple until the WWDC.

If Apple, or anyone who purchases this dares to comment about how innovative or visionary this "iPad Mini" is, I will probably go apeshit.
