One 12-year-old boy from Pittsburgh, Penn., sustained second-degree burns on his back after engaging in a dangerous new teen fad with his brother and friends last weekend, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

The "salt and ice challenge" is making its rounds across YouTube and social networking sites. To play the game, kids press salt and ice against their skin for as long as they can tolerate the burning pain or until the injury - which is similar to frostbite -- becomes too severe.

According to WPXI-TV, the unnammed victim will need several months to recover and his family released a statement warning other students of the game's dangers:

“We want teenagers and the general public to know that the 'salt and ice challenge' is extremely dangerous. Videos on You Tube, Facebook and other social media do not accurately show the terrible injuries that can result. We are grateful that our son is recovering and hope that sharing his story will stop other young people from attempting this stunt."
The incident comes two months after school officials in the area expressed concern to parents that the fad was catching on with students -- sending a letter informing on the dangers of the game.

Why would anyone do this? C'mon fellow youth, are we really this stupid?

It's a pain tolerance thing. That they were stupid enough to let it frostbite a pattern is just unfortunate

This shit is old. Kids have been doing that for YEARS! I remember people doing it on the school but some 10 years ago when I was 8. It's stupid.

That's genius. Let's see who can hurt themselves the most! If you're gonna be stupid, do it..well, not stupidly. Do the cinnamon challenge. Don't deliberately injure yourself.

Dude, whaaaaat? I did this shit for fun, and as a method of self harm. How or more WHY he did it that severely (and to his back? what the hell?) is beyond me.

The shit really isn't that bad, I am very confused.

I saw this on a news site last night, and basically face palmed in disappointment because of the level of stupidity. How stupid do you have to be to do that do severely... and a cross? At least he'll have a funny story to tell for the rest of his life. "Hey, how did you get that giant cross on your back?" "Oh funny story actually...."

"So that's how I became an atheist."

It's pure stupidity but I do feel sorry for the kid, he's gonna be in pain for quite awhile with that and I'm sure he regrets the decision now. And he's gonna have to live with it. Hope he recovers well though.
