Maybe you should tell him that it is a serious thing and that it certainly shouldn't be something to be poked at.

Since he's your best friend, you should sit down with him and talk about it. Don't just ditch him with out seeing his actual perspective when he finds out you do it. If does accept you over you doing SH, also mention to him that when he jokes around about SH, that he makes you feel bad. I'm sure his intention isn't to make you feel bad so try talking to about all this. If he doesn't accept you and treats you like crap after, he isn't a true friend.

My friends did that, some still do. After I told my 2 closest friends, one of them who quite often made gestures and made fun of people that do it, they stopped. I don't know if that's just because I talked to them or because they realised that it's wrong but yeah. Although I've noticed quite a few other people also do it, it's annoying but you can't stop everyone from saying stuff if you don't want to be obvious about it. Honestly I think the only reason we think they are always talking about it is because we're looking out for it. Can you remember people making fun before you started? I don't. Try to ignore it, if you're very close then maybe sit him down when the time is right and explain to him. It might be hard and awkward, I know first hand, he might not completely understand but if he's that much of a friend then he should stop when he realises it hurts you. He might not understand the severity or what drives people to do it. Naivety to the subject is usually the reason people poke fun of things.
