View Full Version : What should I expect for sports next school year?

Hello guys. So I am an incoming freshman that is going to start high school in September, and for a well-rounded university application along with my own health I will probably do some sports. Now, what you have to understand about me is that I am DEFINITELY not a sporty guy. Not at all. The last time I did paid sports classes was Tae-Kwon Do in 2nd grade, with swimming (the only sport I currently do) being last summer. So for my own well-being and not to die from injury I would like to know what I should expect for high school sports.
I plan to do (over the entire year, not in one season lol) probably a pick from either tennis (includes badminton), lacrosse, swimming, or golf (lol probably not though). Obviously swimming because of experience, tennis/badminton because the previous school year I actually started LIKING a sport (which is weird for me :D), or lacrosse because it seems exhilarating while not being as freakishly scary as American football O_O. My friend said that you can get really injured in lacrosse from fastballs or something like that, is that true? Also, are guys super-competitive in these sports (being I kind of hate crazy competition)? And (this applies really to P.E also), is changing awkward for sports like lacrosse and showers? Because at my junior high we didn't need to shower after gym so I am kind of nervous about the entire showering-naked thing o.o.
Thanks!
EDIT: Also what sports do you guys also recommend, along with the examples I provided?

I think lacrosse can be pretty vicious, tho i haven't ever played it myself. Golf might actually be alright if you aren't a very sporty person? i think there will be competitive people what ever you are doing. do you know what the changing rooms are like in your new school? in mine the showers were in their own cubicles, so you might be worrying about nothing. they never forced you to have a shower anyway, you just got changed and then went to your next class. I played rugby for a rugby club last year and they had communal showers there. none of the u16 team ever showered, we just got dressed and went home, till one day our training clashed with one of the mens teams. They all went in the showers. not wanting to look babyish we all did too. (no one died of embarassment) So i think if there are communal showers and everyone else is doing it then it would be better to join in otherwise your just going to draw attention to yourself.
I recommend rugby as a sport. i suppose its sort of similar to American football, but without the padding and helmets. There are positions you can play where you don't get totally mauled :D Hockey is a sport i like too - field hockey, not ice hockey, never tried that tho i would like to. If you get a chance to take fencing at all then try it. I think its good for someone who isn't overly sporty too.

Well, for the school I am going for my ninth year I believe it is communal. The school I am going to starting with my tenth year has a new campus, and offer basically any sport imaginable. Fencing and rugby are included, but I always seen rugby as the most brutal of sports though. Seems to be even more vicious than American football. I will look into it though.

Jealous! American schools always sound way better than ours here. They seem to be really into sports. No one cares here. Yeah, rugby can be kind of brutal. Hope the shower situation works out ok.

Depends where you are though. Luckily New York's specialised high schools have a great balance of sports and academics.
Do you think rugby would be too harsh as one of my first sports in a while? Do you do it?
