GREECE, N.Y. (WIVB) - The middle school students who tormented a bus aide in the Greece Central School District have been suspended from school for one year.

Karen Klein was viciously bullied and the videos were posted to YouTube, drawing worldwide outrage and raising more than $650,000 in donations to send Klein on a vacation. On Friday, the district announced the results of their investigation, saying the students have been suspended from school for a year and will be transferred to the district's reengagement center, located in a non-school facility.

What's more, the students will be required to complete 50 hours of community service with senior citizens and complete a program in bullying prevention.

The full release from the district follows:

Greece Central School District Superintendent Barbara Deane-Williams today announced that the due process requirements have been met and the district is able to release the result of their investigation and the assignment of disciplinary consequences for the four Athena Middle School students involved in the mistreatment of their bus monitor.

Following individual meetings this week with school and district administrators, each family waived their right to a hearing and agreed to one-year suspensions from school and regular bus transportation. The Greece Central School District is legally required to provide all students ages 5 to 16 with an education, therefore, during the 2012-13 school year, the students who have been suspended will be transferred to the district Reengagement Center, located in a non-school facility. This alternative education program keeps middle school students on track academically while providing a structured opportunity for students to take responsibility for their actions by completing community service hours and receiving formal instruction related to conduct and behavior that prepares them for a productive future. The program includes a strong parent involvement component.

Each student will be required to complete 50 hours of community service with senior citizens and will complete a formal program in bullying prevention, respect and responsibility. In accordance with district policy, if at 30 weeks into the school year the students have completed the conditions of their discipline and are in good standing at the Reengagement Center, they can apply for early readmission to Athena Middle School.

Rarely are school districts able to announce the exact discipline students receive for violations of the Code of Conduct. It was possible in this case because each of the students involved admitted to wrongdoing, accepted the recommended consequences and agreed to permit the district to publicly release the terms of their disciplinary action. The parents and students in this case cooperated fully with our investigation and with the Greece Police investigation, which helped to expedite this process and resolve this matter quickly. We thank the Greece Police Department for their continued partnership and guidance, as well as the many Greece Central School District staff members and school leaders who have worked to resolve this matter.

This summer, Greece Central School District staff, including transportation employees, will continue to take part in previously scheduled bullying prevention trainings. The trainings will include information on New York State’s Dignity for All Students Act, requiring schools to provide a safe and supportive environment free from discrimination, intimidation, taunting, harassment and bullying on school property, on school buses and at school functions.

Greece Central School District remains committed to bullying prevention efforts through full implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) in all schools and the Olweus Bullying Prevention model. In 2011, the district established, and posted on the district website, a clear bullying reporting process that identifies trained staff in each school for parents and students to work with to address bullying and harassment if it occurs. This process will be more highly publicized throughout the district.

The district is currently completing an internal review of policies, training, reporting and appeals protocols to ensure clear steps that employees and students can take to combat bullying and behavior that cultivates a negative environment of disrespect. This incident does not reflect the majority of Greece students but nonetheless we are committed to full implementation of our discipline policies and Code of Conduct. Those wishing to anonymously report bullying can do so by calling our Safe School Helpline at 1-800-418-6423, extension 359.

Yup. Looks good. I still think she should have charged them to some sort of extent, but that's her choice. i would have charged them, plus made sure they got these punishments as well. But that's all IMO....

If they stayed in school they'd probably be murdered anyways. (Which I think is a disappointment that that won't happen)

Can anyone point me to some more details about exactly what the kids did to her? I haven't even heard of this case yet and I'd like to know more.

Im all for punishment. But that dosent seem fair. I mean people get bullied to the point of death every day. But absolutley nothing happens to them. I am not justifying what those children did one bit and i'm glad threr getting punished. But makeing them fail an entire grade? And 50 hours of community service? Thats a little harsh. If were all of a sudden going to actually do something about bullying and not just talk about it, why don't we get all the murdering bullies as well. This is not the first time this has happened, and i'm pretty sure this won't be the last. Yet some kid had the balls to put it on youtube ( probably trying to humiliate her more) and the whole world gets their panties in a wad. I agree punishment is needed but not that much. That will ruin those kids lifes. And how would you feel if you picked on somebody and all of a sudden you couldnt get into collage because you got suspended for an entire year?

They're being placed in the district's reengagement center to keep them on track academically.

At least they're facing some punishment. Words can't even describe how wrong it was for them to do what they did.

Tis good enough for them not enough but good. Im sure they cant move without fear. God knows back in my second level School the 6th years would have beat them or tormented them till they were gone mad. Not the least to say they could been thrown into the local river.

Sounds like a good punishment.

Honestly.... how is being out of school a punishment?? I never get that. I fail to see how keeping them out of school is going to teach them anything or make them anymore productive in the future. If they want to suspend them that's fine but an entire year is really uncalled for. Community service and being apart of a bullying prevention program is perfect but keep them in school

I think those kids did wrong and should be punished. But, why didn't Mrs. Klein just ignore them as long as they weren't doing anything dangerous or fighting in the bus? Why should she give a shit what dumb middle school kids say?

You obviously have not seen the video. She was ignoring them, but many times it got to the point where the kids where literally screaming such disgusting things. They would ask her questions over and over again, to the point where she couldn't ignore them anymore. She barely said anything the whole video.

These kids deserved a worse punishment in my opinion, little rats.

I totally agree with you, they should have had a more severe punishment than 1 year suspension, but that is just my opinion.

Dunno. What they did to her was horrid but barring taking them out back and flogging them im not sure what else they could have done. I don't think jail is the right place for them. It sounds like 1 year in a facility that keeps them academically on track, makes them do 50 hours of community service, and makes them take anti bullying classes is exactly the right thing to do. If they learn their lesson then they can rejoin their friends at regular school. I'm sure they were also severely punished by their parents. I know mine would and also think of the embarrassment of not going to a regular school. AND the old lady gets over half a million dollars for a dream vacation.

She's a bus monitor, isn't she supposed to prevent these sort of things? Obviously she failed at her job, now it's gotten her a ton of cash for it.

They need a better punishment than just giving them a year suspension. I feel it doesn't really teach them a lesson by making them stay out of school for a year.
