im a guy. is it ok if i ask a girl out over the internet, like in an i.m., or do i need to do it in person? i.m. just seems so much easier.

Bad idea. Sends the wrong message and, in my opinion, might come off as downright creepy. If you do meet her anywhere, make it someplace open.
