Status update! Facebook has changed YOUR email address... without telling 900million users

If you haven't looked closely at your Facebook contact information in a while, then it may come as a surprise.
The social network with 900 million profiles, has taken it upon itself to change users' email addresses and replace it with one that ends in '@facebook.com'.
The changeover happened today, with each individual's personal email account being hidden in place of the one Facebook thinks you should use.

Secret switch: Facebook hid the email addresses of its 900 million users today and replaced them with a generic @facebook.com
It means that anyone who searches for you on Facebook and wanted to send an email will now only be able to see @facebook.com - unless you manually revert.
This means the email will come via Facebook messages instead of another account.

They didn't do that with my own email address. No, they just created a new email address for me. Lol, I don't give a crap, no more spam from Facebook on my main email address. I did not know Facebook had the right to change your email account without informing you though. Kind of under-handed of them in my opinion.

good point. and yeah they seemed to have added an email address. well I'm starting to think this might not be so bad, I won't be getting any FB stuff on my email either.

Wow. Just wow.

Also a number in mine?!
I guess since they are too lazy to give us a nice and unique one.

This is stupid. They spend millions of dollars changing it. It's getting to the point when no one will go on Facebook. It just gets harder to understand by the change.
Next to no one likes timeline..

Just my two cents..

Here's how to replace with your original email. Click the edit button and then switch which email is shown and which is hidden away. Sorry, mein facebook ist auf Deutsch, but you can still see what to click

(Verborgen means hidden away, Angezeit means Visible.)

They added their own email and made it visible on your timeline and hid the one you had before. Just go reverse it. That bugs me, ugh.

Its just a couple if dollars worth of coding. I'm not sure how this could ever cost millions, unless they did it one by one...

For fucks sake, so much entitled butthurt here.
Seriously stop whining, it's a 'problem' that's solved in fucking 5 seconds and it's even more solvable by just deleting your facebook.
Facebook is for egotistical Americans anyway. There are bigger fucking problems in the world.

Oh, they did? I never noticed, actually. People that have something important to say won't use facebook to tell me, because I won't respond to it, provided I even see it in the times I do check facebook. Simple as. :)

Also a number in mine?!
Awwwh, poor you!

spend millions of dollars changing it.
It takes a few lines of code -- yes, even in PHP where everything is made difficult -- and a few minutes of someone thinking, "gee, we can get into even more personal details of people's lives now!"

It's getting to the point when no one will go on Facebook. It just gets harder to understand by the change. Next to no one likes timeline..
Before people massively stop using Facebook, there will have to be a really big revelation or realisation. People are resistant to change -- and that's just the genius of it. Facebook can get away with more and more stunts because "well, everything is on there anyways, it's too difficult to change it all now". Besides, you still seem to be using it. Obviously it wasn't that bad.

And so things continue exactly like they do now. Facebook does not, will not, and doesn't need to give a fuck. Until people stop using it and massively switching to something else, maybe then will they change things. But we're talking about 10, maybe 15 years from now.

Oh the negativity on this thread, and bashing/insulting me, an "egotistical American" guess what, I'm not one of those who post every minute of the day, barely even in two months, and a comment here and there. I'm not egotistical, maybe you're the egotistical one calling others that. cough cough Haufen.

Nobody said or implied that he was referring to you, until you said that. You seemed to feel addressed, which could mean that what he said could actually be true about you...

He wasn't "insulting" anyone in particular. You chose to jump to the conclusion that he was talking about you. Where, specifically, did anybody at all say that the quote was directed at you? Nowhere?
Then let's move on and stay on topic.

I agree with this blunt statement. It's a tiny change that is easily reversed and has no adverse effect on your privacy, account security or anything else.

The changeover happened today, with each individual's personal email account being hidden in place of the one Facebook thinks you should use.

Of course they're going to change it to the one they think you should use. Facebook is a corporation. Over the past few months it's been mimicking Google by expanding into other parts of the Internet. Facebook wants to be your homepage and the center of your online experience. Giving you a Facebook email address is a harmless part of this plan, and it's completely inconsequential. If you can't handle "all the changes," why keep using the website? In the end, Facebook is entirely a choice to continue using. Most of the changes they make to the interface are perfectly fine and don't affect the functionality of the site, and bitching every time the smallest little thing is modified won't make a difference and is completely pointless in the end.

The only complaints about Facebook (of all the things to complain about) that I really pay attention to are the ones about changes to the Terms of Service, which are important. Besides that, you all chose to sign up for the website. It's up to you to adapt to the changes they put up every now and then, or delete your account and move on. It's just too easy to start an angry mob on the Internet over the most inconsequential of things.

You can link to whatever you want, as long as they have adequate sources to back their facts up. If you are unsure, feel free to search other news sources -- even Usenet for all I care -- to confirm these facts.

That's because you don't have a username set, or facebook supposedly couldn't find anything relevant for you.

I surely didn't know this. Thanks for telling! But what exactly is the purpose of having a @facebook.com email? I don't see what it helps...

Wonder.
June 30th, 2012, 09:23 AM
It's pretty stupid that they changed it for you, but I think it's actually sort of a good idea to have a facebook email. Saves you time because you're never going to use it. Some might.

Why does everyone hate the timeline so much? Seriously. It's almost exactly the same as it was before.

Lol I didn't even notice. I'm not bothered to be honest, the only thing that's bugging me is that I'm still getting Facebook notifications in my googlemail account >.<
Edit: Why does everyone hate the timeline so much? Seriously. It's almost exactly the same as it was before.
It's not, the whole layout has changed and the fact that you have to make every status/picture you put up private is stupid but meh, no point in complaining if it's already been implemented.

Facebook, like I thought everyone knew, wants all of your info, to sell to others. That's why they're such a valuable company. Trying to get people to do every aspect of their lives on Facebook only earns them even more money.
Email is just one such step.

I agree with this statement. It's a bunch of entitled egotistical users who don't like the fact that they don't control what happens to the site itself. I don't like this, but I'm not going to go out of my way to complain about it like most people are doing.

I agree, all the big UK news corporations are "Corrupt" to some extent as well...

I agree that this issue may seem trivial, It's just Facebook keep's changing stuff without telling us. It needs to be more transparent about it's policies and upcoming changes.

You know i cant see why everyone is getting so upset. So what Bookface gave you a email [email protected] the only thing it is going to do is when somebody goes to their gmail and goes

From [email protected]
To [email protected]

Subject Facebook crap
Hey are you going to the fund raiser on Saturday?.

Then my phone vibrates and its like xxx has sent you a message
oh wow. its just another form of them being able to contact you without actually using bookface

now its a total different case if xxx sends an email to [email protected] i will still get that email and bookface can do sweet F.A about it. if bookface actually took away your email address nobody would get any important emails and the whole system would end up a disaster.

Oh and duck234 yes if someone does hack you bookface they can see your primary email that you used to register with bookface or well thats my case

People still stalk through E-mail? Is this 1996? Remember you can track IPs fairly easily and most people have a wealth of personal information on Facebook anyways. Email is the least of your worries.

It isn't safer, if important emails like banking or contracts end up re-routed to the facebook email for some unfathomable reason, it will turn your facebook into an enormous safe open to crack. You already have your personal info on there, imagine with Bank Statements, Credit Cards, personal emails, private information, etc.
