So right now my cat is taking up almost all my bed and being adorible so I can't go to bed so why not start a thread? I am 16 year old boy and I am as white as a marshmallow and my hair is like really dark brown. So I don't like how my hair looks on me being so white so I have tried self tanner and it has worked ok. Does anyone know how to build it up to get really dark or just have some general tips on tanning? Or share any experiances bad or good :D

Don't get sunburned trying to get a tan. I tried that and I just get red and feel awful.

Using self-tanning lotion is ok, but make sure you use plenty of sunblock and be careful if you're going to go outside. My parents have had to have a few moles and etc. removed because they used to be out in the sun a lot when they were younger...not fun!

Using tanning creams/lotions is fine but generally is not going to make you really dark. But if it doesn't get you as dark as you want, do not then try to tan with sun to get darker.

Have you ever tried a spray-tan? I've never tried it myself however they have all different kinds of levels of "tans" from darker shades to lighter ones. I just wouldn't recommend getting too dark of a shade as it might not turn out good and it could look fake haha

I am almost a pro at this!

So I have tried like, 5 different brands. One of the best I've had is Banana Boat Sunless Tanner. It works great, develops color within 2-3 hours. Theirs a new Neutrogena Tanning Spray and it worked pretty good too. The best tips I can give is, a little goes a long way, do a small amount and have it do a small thin layer. Also, do it over the weekend. So it looks like it got developed over those 2 days. Say Monday, you are a marshmallow, then Tuesday you come back super tan, people will know its fake. Also, make sure you wash your hands! You should also do the tanning lotion after a shower, so your exfoliated.

Incase you're wondering how the color is made, their are certain chemicals in the lotion which interact with your skin. Which over time, will stain your skin. Yes stain. That's why it shouldn't come off in a shower, long periods in a bathtub or pool will fade your fake tan. If you do not exfoliate before use, within a few days your skin will look splotchy with color and normal skin color. So exfoliating will reveal the newest skin cells, and take off the top layer of dead skin cells. Also, wear sunscreen. Tanning lotions do not protect against UVA/UVB rays.

My favorite brands are:
Banana Boat Self Tanning Lotion (or something like that)
Neutrogena Tanning Spray

Thanks for info, its so cool to find another guy than sunless tans! I have used banana boat but due to smell and how long it takes to apply. I decided to use a spray called Body Drench (http://www.bodydrench.com/collections/#20657) and it is fantastic and does not smell at all past 10 minutes

2 great tips I have found is that:
1) Use gloves and after take off one glove and put tanner on top of hand and rub in, than do other hand and wipe palms of hands on towel..... THAN get the pinky side of your hand and rub the whole side of hand in-between fingers of other hand and switch. It looks really good. If that makes no sense than tell me :)
2) Put lotion on top of elbows and knees before you spray or rub in self tanner and after application rub these areas with a towel

Question: How do you build up your tan and maintain it? And do you keep face tan, because i use acne washes and exfoliates and it makes tan come off.

Well acne medications shouldn't take it off, if it's Salyclic acid or benzoyl peroxide. The Salyclic acid only causes ur skin to produce more skin cells. Which might cause you to apply a little more each week.
Well each product is different. If its a speed self tanner where it's a fast sunless tan, follow the directions (if it says reapply every 2 hours for deeper tan, reapply 2 hours until its dark enough. If it says reapply each day, reapply each day until you get the darkness you like). Then, generally, to maintain the achieved color, reapply only 2x a week. So say Sunday you get the perfect desired tan. Reapply the tanning lotion on Tuesday and again on Friday. Also, getting a certain strength tanning lotion matters too. Another example. Say your a super white kid, light very pale. Start out with a tanning lotion that's meant for fair to medium skin, once you get the tan of a medium skin tone, go up a degree and get the lotion meant for medium to tan skin tone. Then if you wanna go farther (which I strongly advice against) get the tan to dark skin tone. Also, make sure you rub the lotion in circular motion, so that it won't cause streaking. Streaming is caused by the small wrinkles in your fingers (like those wrinkles tht police use for fingerprints).

Also, what I did for tanning on my hands, is I washed my hands after, then I put a small amount on both index fingers and applied it to my top hand. Then just rubbed off the index fingers with a towel but I first wash my finger haha

Also, getting spray tans is rather expensive. A spray tan only lasts for about 1-1/2 weeks, then you have to she'll out another $30-$80 for another one. Versus a tanning lotion that will last for 1-3 months for about $10-$20. The banana boat works great and is only $6.

Oh and another thing, Bronzers just give a temporary tan look. Self tanners actually stain the skin. The L'Oreal self tanning Bronzers is horrible. Has a bad smell, and worst of all... Has sparkles. I put it on and didn't notice it had sparkles so the whole day I was sparkly, then my friend noticed and called me Edward -_-

Haha sparkles thats so funny!! o ya salon spray tan price is a joke, i ment at home spray. The the body drench stuff has bronser and DHA so you can put it on and instantly be tan for the day and it lastes like 3 days or what not. When you build it up when do you exfoliate again?

Ever other day is good, but of your trying to build up your tan, exfoliate before. Then apply the lotion. Then once you acquire your wanted tan color, exfoliate every other day and apply 2-3 times a week. If your using acne medication apply it 3x a week, like after a shower.

Last Friday I started to build up my tan (not this recent last Saturday but 1 week and 1 days ago). Before I put it on I took a shower. I applied it about 2x that day (color developes in 3 hours) so then the next day, I didn't take a shower, and I applied it an addition 2x, I then achieved the color I wanted. So then Monday I took a shower, I put the lotion on again. Wednesday I took a shower, and I applied it again. Then Friday I took a shower, and applied it again. But it could go about 3-4 days without applying the tanning lotion again. It just might not look its best, your tan I'm speaking of. But if you apply to much, you will look orange, so use just enough for your skin to soak up. The extra that doesn't get soaked up will stay on top of your skin, and turn orange. Which will wash off, some orange may be stain on ur skin but not a lot.

I've used this spray tan stuff from Bath and Body Works once. It actually works really good, but you have to wash your hands after you apply it, or your hands could turn orange...
