Apple was accused of ripping off consumers today as it emerged the next version of the iPhone could render all current accessories obsolete.
Outraged iPhone owners flocked online to complain about the reports that Apple has decided to radically alter the size of the connector in the next iPhone, which is expected to be launched in October.
Speakers, docks and other expensive accessories costing hundreds of dollars would be rendered useless by the move, along with cheaper add-ons such as chargers. Even cars with the current connector built in would need to be upgraded.

Here's an idea, stop throwing away your money at apple products. Nobody is FORCING people to buy the next iPhone, but people will because they feel the need to waste money on the same product but with a 5 infront of it.
"IPHONE5! SAME AS THE IPHONE 4 BUT WITH SLIGHT DIFFERENCES. ONLY $500!"
PROBLEM SOLVED.

It was going to happen eventually. They've had this connection on iPods and iPhones for the past 4 or so years now, I guess it's time to move on. Personally, I don't see why, but I suppose that's business for you. Also, each iPhone is different from each other, just be glad that each iPhone doesn't have it's own separate jack.

You mean like every day?
Also, I'm pretty sure there's a market for connectors that can hook up the new iPhone to the old accessories. It's not the end of the world, jesus. It's like everybody's ignoring Apple's past history of charging for software upgrades, releasing upgrades of their products annually with little changes and big price tags, and generally being grossly overpriced.

the whole point for the new connector is so apple can monitor the accessories for the connector. So an adapter would have to be approved by apple first.

It's no big deal if you really think about it. If you have anything that doesn't use a USB connection (docking stations, for example), it's not like you didn't get your money's worth, and if you have enough to waste on a new iPhone, you certainly have enough to buy a new docking station. As for chargers, generally, those are simple USB cables with a special male adapter at the end. If it's not, then once again, it's at most a $50 expense.
This is not a big deal, you all need to stop freaking out about it. Apple's trying to get more money, yes, but haven't they been since they're existence?

iPods have had the same connector since at least 2004, when my old iPod was from. I wouldn't be surprised if it's always been the same up until now.

I made the new thread because the news was in yesterday's Mail. It mentions the granting of the patent, which is not reported in this thread

Lol people complain about a connector that was on the iPhone since 2007 and is now being changed? Tells a bit about iPhone users right there lol

I'll stick with my HTC one witch is as good - if not better - than the iPhone, and my 3 year old iPod still works and is less likely to break than the newer ones, in other words I don't flock to their "latest and greatest" products.
also: I've heard of a "mini iPad" coming out - isn't that going to just like the iPod??:confused::confused::confused:

I bought my iPhone 4S just because i heard about this , and I like being able to dock my phone in the dock I use for my iPod , but most docks have a connection labelled AUX for auxiliary , so you really need a cheap double male 3.5 mm audio connector .

I find it funny that people are over reacting about this, it's not like apple is the only company that's changing their charger dock or whatever you call it, and I'm pretty sure there will be an accessory that will make most 30 pin dock accessories usable. I also wouldn't consider this a "rip off", to me, a rip off is basically the 4s, same design and nothing new to it, besides siri and a better camera.

Well, seeing that the original iPhone f*cked up the headphone jack, and it shaped the headphone market to the way it is today, i'm sure the iPhone accesory market will adjust :)

don't worry they'll sell you a new-connector-to-old-connector converter, for only $25 :D:D

In the end, it comes down to the consumers...If they don't do their research, and they impulsively buy every single new iPhone because each one is "sooooo innovative", then they realize after it is too late that the jack was changed, joke's on them for buying iPhones like they were cigarettes.

Damn right. Costs enough money as it is.

If anything that choice will hurt the company. They've had the same plug-in thing for years there is no good reason that should change now. I have a feeling that it was something to do with steve job's death, because I'm fairlly cofident that he wouldn't have done that

Apple is just trying to make more money like always. But it is kind of time for a change I guess, but I really don't see why they need to, it is already proprietary. I will just buy the 4s when the 5 comes out thank you very much.

The cheap way to have a cell phone is to have a pay as you go one. My whole family have a pay as you go one. There are even some smartphones too

The new connector dock is supposed to conform with specifications of most other phones on the market. Not only is this not apple's fault, but they may have a reason for doing this. Maybe some new technology could come of it like longer battery life or shorter charge time. Either way, you don't have to buy the latest iPhone. I'm sure people who used to listen to cassette tapes were pissed when the mp3 player came out. Buy a $14 speaker and get over it. I'm more worried about how apple's gonna innovate, and other people are gonna try and copy. The new, "best" phone (Samsung Galaxy 3) on the market's voice control has trouble recognizing female voices, and when it understands a male, it doesn't do what it's asked to like Siri can. But touch two of the same phones together and you can share stuff (meaning someone should need to have the same phone [another rip-off])... Apple doesn't rip people off. Remember the free case program? Sorry for ranting...

Seriously off topic.... :censored: EDIT: Just saying :P
I don't have any apple products so I can't really talk, but as an open minded observer of this controvery, I think that it could be a good thing, I mean there must be technological reasons for the change and it may improve the experience for users. We don't know what will happen but who cares anyway, so long as the overall product is to the customers satisfaction?

All people ever seem to do is complain
All Apple ever seems to do is rip people off.
I don't see how this is exactly "news," but it's interesting notwithstanding.

Nope it's not, remember the usb to firewire connector for a Macbook Pro?, Yes that will be the same end-result, Apple will consider this stuff you know, like new connectors and what are their drawbacks, So they will reinvent the iPhone 5 perhaps to a newer and slimmer connector, and 'this' connector can have a converter, like an output to the 35pin dock connector like the previous Gens, I don't see why this is a big issue
