I'm sure that anyone who has scars from SI can relate to this question.

In my particular case, the scarring is pretty horrible. My arms look like a damn zebra. I cut VERY VERY seldom now; in fact, the worst of my scars were made over a year ago. Now, I am trying to socialize very hard. I'm trying to make new friends, and am even trying to get a boy/girlfriend (I'm bi). But some day soon, the people I'm getting close to are gonna start wondering why I'm wearing long sleeves/gloves in ninety degree weather. I'm not sure wat to say!!!
I could be honest, but I'm already kinda weird. I don't wanna scare them off; it's hard enough for me to befriend people to begin with. What can I say???

It's not like I can just say I was attacked by a drunken ninja, who kept missing cutting my throat because I was holding my arms up :P
(I mean, duuuuh!!!! I could easily bring down any ninja with my legs and arms amputated and a blindfold on :P)

Really? I use the ninja excuse all the time, works for me.
You could say that you have some ugly chickenpox scars that you're embarrassed about. That's about 80% true already :P

It all depends really is cutting a past or present problem for you? How old are the scars and how bad?
If you still cut perhaps you might want to do it somewhere less visible however you should also be trying to stop, look around at the various techniques and distractions posted.

At the end of the day scars will always make people who self harm feel self conscious, its a matter of realising that self harm isn't something to be ashamed of or kept hidden away. It took me over two years but we had hot weather recently and I got my legs out no one said about the scarring I haven't really braved my arms yet but I will eventually. You just need confidence if anyone does ask tell them something like 'I went through a difficult time' and change the subject most people won't press you for anymore information.

Just say you got in a bad accident or someone tried to harm you years ago
