So I have been having an ongoing debate with my mate for about 3 days now and we can not seem to settle on an agreement. I have always liked the Sony Vaio's but he says there a load of crap and a Mac Book is the way to go if you want a good laptop, I have done loads of searching and by what I have read it seems that Apple have a good reputation but for the price you could acctually build a way better machine. What are peoples thaughts on a good laptop?

Depends on what you want to do on them. For typical internet browsing and such, I couldn't justify the price..so stick with pc for that. All the 3D creation programs like 3DS Max and Maya are on PC, so any kind of 3D work will be better and a lot easier to do on a PC. Video games are definitely going to be way better on a PC. They're also a lot eisier and less expensive to upgrade and customize. For video editing, music, animation and such, I've always seen macs as the standard. I don't really understand specs and stuff, so I can't say why that is, but pretty much every professional music studio uses macs, and most of the video editors, graphic design/creative type people I've met use macs.
I personally use a Macbook Pro (the 2011 model) and have had literally no problems with it. It runs just as good as the day I got it. I also like the interface a lot better than windows. (sure there's linux, but that's not my thing either). There's also basically no chance of me ever getting a virus on it (not sure why, but macs just don't get viruses) Also being with the type of work I do for school, and am hoping to begin a career in, I'd say it's been well worth the investment. Plus, if anything ever does go wrong with it, for whatever reason, I've got Apple Care on it, so it'd get repaired basically free (though that only lasts for 3 years).
I'd say if you're thinking about it, go in and try one yourself, and think about what you'll be doing on it. If you can afford it, they're actually pretty nice. Also, they're pretty cool to look at :)

Well I mean I'm no pro when it commes to computers but I have always thaught that they are more of a status symbol rather than the "best" you can get for your cash. I have an old Ergo Ensis 211 laptop that is comming up to being 7 years old and it runns a treat I'm on it right now haha and well my mate keeps telling me that I need to get something all modern and new and how they are so much better and faster and all that. He says he wants a Mac because they are all of that but I just really dont see the value for money in them and after all everything these days is about value for money because you can get so badly ripped off so easily lol

What a trivial issue to have an argument over. The answer is: use what works out best for you.
If you need to edit videos/pictures, either will work -- there are programs for both.
If you want to play games, then don't use a laptop, regardless of the type.
If you want to just browse the internet, either will work.
The differences lie in how you want to be seen, as in your "swagga", like "ooh, I have a mac, I'm soo much better than you". And of course, some programs are made exclusively for one operating system. Sometimes there will be emulators that work, other times you must use that particular OS.

What the fuck, I have a Mac, and it's lasted 5 years, and my grandfathers had lasted 15 years. My mothers LC lasted 8 months.

Your point exactly?
Defects happen from every hardware company, including Apple.
Besides, your mother's PC was most likely the cheapest piece of crap you could find at Walmart.
And if you're bragging about longevity, I have;
A computer from 1998 that still works just fine.
A computer from 2004 that still works just fine. (That's actually used as my home server right now (Meaning, it runs 24/7 and is under high loads a good majority of the day))
A laptop from 2004 that still works just fine.
A laptop from 2005 that still works just fine.
(I also have a computer from 2011, and laptops from 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012, but those won't get included since they're not old enough to count really).
Why do all of these PCs still work after all the years? Because they weren't bought from crap companies (At least at the time they were bought they weren't crap companies).
@ the OP: The 'best' laptop for you is the one you personally want. If you like Macs, then get a MacBook, if you like the way Asus, Acer, Samsung, Sony, Lenovo, (Etc.) makes and designs laptops, then get one of those. It's all up to your personal opinion as to what's "best" for you. Just make sure you research, and read through product reviews on sites like Newegg and Amazon before you make your decision. Since reviews on those sites will likely point out hardware flaws LONG before the company knows about it.

Well I'm not wanting to cause any arguments but I was just woundering what people thaught was good that was out there. I am looking towards the sony vaio's at the moment because I like the looks of them and some of their other tech like the playstations are really hard wearing. does anyone have one of these and what are they like?.. Thanks people :)

While this is sometimes true, you can't say that's why everyone gets one.
If you have the money, and you just like its software/OS/hardware more than you like how a PC (don't get smart assy on that term :P) then what's the problem?

Personally I use a MacBook Pro, but until that, I used a pc. I have never regretted it. I'll say that it is very much certain that you could build a better pc for the money, but for me the whole package of a beautiful machine, excellent os, and just overall quality, is just perfect.

Apple products are for suburban hipsters.
You can make your own build with higher spec than what is offered by Apple and half the price. Dual OS it with Linux. And you will have a wonder of a machine.

macs make good paperweights lol but seriously macs are batter for photo editing, video making and things like that however they have limited software and generally the software may cost a bit more but im not sure.. and yes its true they cant get viruses but they can get worms and when they go wrong they go wrong, as far as i can tell i havnt found many people that would be willing to repair MACS and i work in the I.T industry.
a windows pc/laptop is better for the general purpose user whether u just want to post on this forum or post ur life away on facebook, or do ur coursework etc then a laptop is the way to go since u can get better specs for £1000

A "worm" falls into the category of "computer viruses". It's actually been quite common that you can exploit MacOS computers, the most recent incident being the holes in Apple's custom Java build.
These incidents just aren't as widespread as issues with Microsoft computers.

That's because there's nothing you can do besides bringing it to Apple, unless you intend to void your warranty

That's because there's nothing you can do besides bringing it to Apple, unless you intend to void your warranty
Or, bring it to the many authorized repair/dealer chains around the globe, such as Best Buy's 'Geek Squad', or, you could just do it for free with the 1 year of AppleCare.
And the same could be said for other brands as well. I could say"
That's because there's nothing you can do besides bringing it to HP, unless you intend to void your warranty
And it'd be the same.
Sorry. Anyways,
----------------
I've had a MacBook Pro of my own since April because 1) I wanted a Laptop, and 2) I wanted one that had a more "solid" feel to it.
I love my MacBook.
But it really depends on what you want and what you are intending to use it for. If you are a programmer, a "pc" laptop is the way to go. However if you want to to more "life" stuff, like importing and editing photos, making movies, designing webpages, organizing music, the MacBook Pro and Mac OS X's iLife bundled on every new and refurbished mac does an outstanding job compared what there is to offer preinstalled on other computer brands.
I'd also say that the Webcam is pretty good, as far as laptops go (720p, or the old style HD)
Also, popular to contrary belief, it is upgradable, and if you don't order new parts from Apple, you're paying the same amount for upgrades as the rest of the PC industry.
THat is why I like my mac, but it's really up to you and what you'd be using it for.

Not really. Apple always makes things with the philosophy of "non user-serviceable parts inside. deal with it". HP, Asus, and basically all other "PC makers" have some user-serviceable parts, i.e. you can replace what's inside without completely breaking everything.
And there's more competition -- everybody can repair a "PC", but only "Apple authourised" places can repair Macintoshs. The rights to have "Apple authourised", on the other hand, cost a pretty penny.

Never buy a mac if you want to upgrade. The Pro has terrible specs. Do yourself a favor and make your own build.

I have a HP laptop and I love it. I do think that macs are a little over priced though. Unless you need a computer for serious graphics and stuff I think that mine is just fine and it was almost a 10th of the price of a mac.
Mac computers come with terrible Graphics Cards, IMO.

Your friend is not necissarily correct. Mac and PC are both good for different things. In order to properly choose a computer, you need to consider a variety of things:
If you want to play video/computer games: A PC is better as it is more customizable which means if you need better graphics just get a new graphics card.
If you want to run lots of applications: Grab a PC because most (almost ALL) major applications run on a PC.
If you need a casual computer for watching videos: Here I would actually say go with a Mac because their screens are usually more vibrant and beautiful than PC.
If you don't want to hassle with viruses or computer problems: Once again, Mac. Mac has less viruses which in turn equals less hassle!
I use PC and prefer it just because of its load of helpful features such as 1.) Not being locked out of your own operating systems files, 2.) Having tons of application compatibility, and lastly 3.) Overall more customization.
Hope my input helped fuel your decision,

I like Apple stuff but it's way too expensive. I'm very careful with my money and if I can have a laptop that does the same shit but significantly less money, I'll do without. The only Apple products I have are the iPad and iPod. I got the iPod from my friend who didn't want it anymore, and the iPad my mom won at work.
Seriously though Apple is overrated for the PRICE everything is.

Guess I'll add my two cents in too. A computer isn't all over specs and pricing. A PC is definitely more customizable on the most parts and yes, when built correctly can offer more flexible performance and at a cheaper cost.
Most if not all applications will run seamlessly across any platform. Since Windows runs flawlessly on Mac, and I experience this every day, from a literal point of view, a Mac will run a greater number of applications. How many will need to run everything though? Unless you're specialized in your field and require your computer for specific purposes, let's be frank and say, this is irrelevant. You choose your operating system based upon your familiarity and preference, and 99% of the time, either is more than enough for your computing needs.
Watching videos? You don't need a Mac for that. In fact, if you're really over obsessed over quality, there are better options. However, the Macbook Pro is especially famous for its very true display which is extremely hard to beat at its price point and portability.
Viruses & problems are an equal threat to both operating systems. Mac is by no means any more resistant to any infections, and there are probably less lurking around for the two reasons that fewer users are on Mac than Windows, and Apple generally are more pro-active in working against any possible loopholes.
This debate could go on forever and needless to say, for the average teenager on here, go with your instincts. There's nothing truly important to debate.
