Here's the new Microsoft Surface tablet
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has an uphill battle on his hands.
He needs to break into the tablet market, taking on both the iconic market-leader, the iPad, as well as as an ever-burgeoning range of svelte Android tablets.
However, after Microsoft's repeated attempts over 30 years to break into the tablet market, it now seems the software giant has the right tools to make it right.
The Microsoft Surface tablet was officially unveiled in Los Angeles last night, and from the favourable first impressions, it looks like we have a three-way race in the tablet market.
The Surface comes with a 10.6" screen, a clever magnetic cover which doubles as a keyboard, and a kickstand to hold it upright on a table.
In a huge paradigm shift for Microsoft, the traditional Windows Desktop has been scrapped for Microsoft's new 'Metro' tile-based theme.

The keyboard looks like Microsoft has taken Apples smart cover and added a keyboard onto it. I'm not surprised if it functions like a smart cover too, turning the screen off when the cover is placed, etc.
It looks pretty cool though, but I think I'll stick to a physical keyboard with raised buttons, I think typing on that would be a nightmare.

The tablet looks pretty interestig. To be honest though, I don't think it will do as well as the Ipad.

I think it looks pretty solid, with Windows 8 and all. Looks like a tablet on the ''surface'' and underneath a fully operatable system awaits. Don't like the idea about the cover with buttons. Seems to much like a niche... Because you'll already have a keyboard, with leveled keys... Soo..

Might be cool. I was playing with windows 8 on my desktop and didn't like it for desktop but I thought it would be really cool on a tablet. Probably won't get it though since I already have an iPad.

OMG If I had known it would have a keyboard I would of wanted one a long time ago. but the question is... is it powerful enough for gaming? I'll ask my mom If I can get one. :) Tablets are much more portable than a laptop because they are usually lighter.

They will actually be offering 2 versions of the keyboard, one is the touch-based keyboard, the other is a 'tactile' keyboard with actual raised buttons as you called them, pretty much a laptop keyboard in it's feel.

Depends on what kind of gaming you plan on doing, and which version you get.
All Windows 8 machines will be capable of gaming to a certain degree, as Microsoft is imposing pretty strict hardware requirements for all Win8 devices (not just tablets).
If you go the Windows 8 RT route, you'll only be able to play games from the official Store, which will tell you if your computer is good enough to play a particular game or not. This is because the legacy desktop is not being included with the RT version of Windows. (Meaning legacy desktop applications will not be able to run on the RT version)
If you go the Windows 8 Pro route, which includes the legacy desktop, then you'll be able to play almost any game available on Windows today.
It's hard to say what games will be playable on this tablet, seeing as detailed specs haven't been released yet (Seeing as the RT version won't hit the shelves for at least another ~4-5 months. And I'd expect the Pro to be released a month to a few months after that). I would imagine you'd be able to play most mid-range games available today, such as The Sims or SimCity, but don't expect to play Battlefield 3 on high settings.
I know for sure that the RT version will have an ARM-based NVidia chip in it, and it's speculated that the Pro version will have an Intel Core i5 (Ivy Bridge) chip in it. So if that gives you somewhat of an idea of what the two versions will be capable of, then there. :P

Yeah I saw it on Android central (ironic?). Anyways yeah I was pretty impressed with it. I just can't afford all of these new things all of the time.
