View Full Version : Cupcakes and Wine!

I recently finished my painting of a cupcake with wine and grapes. I know the bottle neck is a bit crooked, and the grapes aren't my best, but it all works. Opinions? I might post some of my other paintings later on in this thread.

I like how you've played with light and shadow. It's a soft lighting, but still noticeable. Not sure what's going on in the background though, it seems a little choppy.

Overall really pretty and fairly lifelike! Nice job :)

That's really cute. It reminds of a picture at this coffee shop I go to. I like it.

I totally agree! It looks great, I wish I had that kind of skill :(

Interesting.

I've noticed that the cupcake looks flat; the tonal change between its left (darker) and right (lighter) sides is minimal for its base, and non-existent for its creamy part, and that's why it doesn't render the feeling of a volume. In short: lighten its rightmost part and/or darken its leftmost part.

There is something wrong in regard to lightning with the grapes. You properly took into account the darkening that occurs over the grapes as a whole, as well as lightning for every ball as a separate entity. What, however, doesn't work is that you didn't properly represent shades that one ball creates over its neighbours. I think it is visible the most on the top-right part of the grapes.

I like the impressionnist tone of the composition, nice job on that.

Hope I helped!

Oh wow, how right you are. I never even noticed that the icing on that cupcake lacked shading. I painted the cupcake about five months ago, so I guess I just never went back and looked it over. The rest of the painting I only just recently did.

As for the grapes, it never even dawned on me to take a look into the fact that some of the grapes are actually beneath each other. I've never looked at photographs or other paintings when creating my own (not since I've started creating my own) so I guess it just never showed up to me. Thanks!

Commenting time, then! :)

What bugs me the most with that last paint is that the perspective of every element seems different from the others. The lower part of the bottle hints at a rather low focal point, but the cheese suggests a much higher one. I find that quite disturbing.

The fallen upper part of the bottle is not ok - its opening appears to nearly directly face us, while the rest points to somewhere at the bottom-left corner of the frame. The opening would have probably appeared more oval-shaped.

The broken bits of the bottle and of the glass don't render well, because they are too small and chip-like; they seem closer to what you get when breaking the window of a car. I would have made those bits larger, with very visible curvature, and strong light contrast at their edges.

Interesting paint for sure!

That painting was the first free-paint I ever did, so that could be a good reason why. Thank you for the input! It will definitely make a difference in paintings to come.

I really like your painting style, Lexi. You're quite good :D Your strokes are very painterly (as my art teacher would like to say) and your use of color is excellent. Paint more! I love seeing your work :3

It looks nice, but I'd consider doing a background that fits the subjects of the portrait. :>

The background fits it perfectly. That is my signature background.
