View Full Version : Is Halloween a lost holiday?

I feel that Halloween has slowly been less celebrated over the years. It makes me sad because Halloween is my favorite holiday! But I've heard people talk about this and they say that Halloween has never been more celebrated! Is it just because of where I live? Or is there a chance that Halloween is actually starting to blow away with the wind?

It really has died down in the last ten years. When I was a kid, the sidewalks were so packed that there were lines at houses. Nowadays they're very sporadic. It's either me being older now or something, but anymore it's just become another excuse for adults to dress up in scantily clad clothing and get drunk.
I think the dwindling holiday spirit is due to a mix of increasing reports of poisoned or razor laced goods, people being too broke to afford to give out candy and the childhood obesity epidemic.

I don't celbrate Halloween, but I celebrate Samhain. To pagans, I think it is as widely celebrated as ever, I don't see anybody trick or treating any more though, it's sort of sad. I would buy gifts for everybody who came... now I end up eating the packages of candy myself...

I think that people are less trusting of others so the idea of sending their kids out to knock on strangers doors isn't as appealing as it was in the last few decades. That and people have gotten lazier and feel like it would probably be easier to just buy their children candy than get a costume and spend a whole night chaperoning them.

I live in a hug sub urban area...tons of massive neighborhoods with families with young children and teenage kids. So it is like the optimal location for Trick or Treating. But I'm also thinking about Horror movies and Haunted houses. Last Halloween I didn't see any movies come out on Halloween. Usually that's a huge day for horror movies. Instead none came out. But also haunted houses, they seem to be doing great! Tons of people going to them. Except last year a worker at Creepyworld fell when climbing out o a prop and accidentally hanged herself. She was hospitalized. I wonder if that's accounted for anything. But everything said above is exactly what I believe is happening. I'm sad

I celebrate Halloween. But, then again, I do live in "The Halloween Capital of the World"... So I kind of have to. :P I have seen no difference from when I was trick-or-treating when I was a kid to what it is now, it actually seems like there are more trick-or-treaters out and about on Halloween haha!

I agree that hallowe'en, as it is celebrated by most people (as in, not samhain) is definitely dying down. Not sure why, and it was my favorite holiday once too, so it's a shame.

I remember when my street was packed with trick or treaters, and I was about 5 when that happened, but since my older sisters have left for college, our streets have died from trick or treaters. There has been a year with only one trick or treater. I'm not a huge fan of Halloween because I don't really care for candy anymore, but I feel like nowadays kids are forced to grow up at such a young age, where Halloween is just a normal day for them. Especially when you get kids who are academic. Also another good reason is too many people really get into Halloween and can do not so good things, or dress up super scary where they scare all the trick or treaters away. Or because technology has become more advance people would rather be playing video games or watching a scary movie instead now. I wish Halloween did go back to the old days where EVERYONE trick or treated! Now it's not "cool" anymore.

I know that even if I don't trick or treat I like to walk around and entertain people with a little act that I put on. It's not too scary, but it's fun to watch. I will also walk around and hand out candy to people who have awesome costumes (everyone) so they don't get upset! Oh well, things change

I don't see any problems there.

My step mom and dad love holloween. A few years ago my step mom dressed up as a pregnant, alcohol drinking, smoking nun lol
I personally believe holloween is more of an oldr type holiday. I know tht on holloween their are a lot of demonic activity where I live. A lot of people do sacrifices and such, my friends always have to bring their black cats in from outside or else they would be killed o-O kinda scary to think about

I've noticed that. Though last year when I went out with my brother, the loot was better. More fullsized candybars (at least in my area)
But yeah I think it's basically what Steph(Zephyr) said.
