It really depends on the girl. Some only have a small hole in their hymen when they first have sex, so more of it tears (thus, it hurts more). But some already tear almost completely from other activity (such as masturbating by inserting objects into the vagina) so not much else is damaged when they first have sex (i.e. won't hurt as much). If you masturbate regularly, and if you're used to inserting things into your vagina, it shouldn't hurt very much at all, if not only giving you mild discomfort.

i believe those who do activities like gymnastics or athletics often tear them during those activities from stretching and so on.

I don't have a hymen but I'm a virgin. I broke it at some point in my life doing exercise I'd expect. I don't remember any instance of pain, but it may have broke a long time ago. So I can't really tell you, unfortunately :/

The pain associated with the tearing of the hymn is different than the pain of first openning of the vagina walls. Before you have had sex or inserted anything bigger than a tampon inside the vaginal canal the walls of the vagina normally lie close together and the first time a penis enters the vagina there is some pain or discomfort for some girls which can last for awhile afterwards. Like others have said most girls tear their hymns from non sexual activities and sports or by inserting things into the vagina while masturbating. I doubt the serious pain your talking about has anything to do with your hymn being torn if it last for several days. If it persist maybe you should consult a doctor or at the least tell your mom.

It did hurt me the first time. I think mine was already broken though before because I didn't notice any bleading. My boyfriend tried to go slow, but I don't think they is much more you can do the first time other than go slow and have enough lubrication.
