So, I'm headed to New York in 2 days, and I'm packing right now. I'm hoping just to bring a carry on, with all of my clothes in it. My carry on is a soft bag, so it can be folded and such, but at its maximum it is 13 in. high, 20 in. long, and 8 in. wide. I am not packing it to its maximum. I already checked the maximums, and it said my bag is too big, but my parents reassured me that it would be fine because when it is smushed down it is quite smaller. Will this be alright?

Go check on the airline's website. If it is bigger than the maximum, it will need to be checked in.

Well is there also a weight limit on the hand baggage? If yes then you will need to make sure it's under that :)

On most airlines I thought it must fit in the overhead compartment or fit underneath the seat. So if you can lift it above your head you should be fine. (This would mimic putting it in the overhead compartment)

Best though to check the airlines website like previously mentioned, just in case.

I looked it up for you and this is what it said:

Height: 9 inches
Length: 14 inches
Width: 22 inches
Total Volume: 2,772 inches cubed
Weight: 44 lbs

You can find a good carryon bag pretty much anywhere, though. I bought mine at Target and it's lasted a year and a half so far. I've flown across the country several times.
Some airports are really strict, so you may need to buy a real carryon bag just in case. Just be prepared to be rejected and keep your money at hand.
