The following 3 pieces of text are answers to the question ‘In your own words, explain the different things you learn about the Shakespeare Schools Festival from reading this online flyer'. There is a box below each piece of text and it for you to indicate a score, out of eight, that you would give the text. There will be an average score of what previous participants have given the text above each answer box.
1. From reading the flyer we quickly learn a range of facts about the festival. For example, that it has been running since 2000, is the largest youth festival, has put 75,000 children on the stage, is a registered charity and has five distinct partners, demonstrating its significance as a national event. Less obvious details, however, are revealed through the images. We see a large group of student participating on stage. It looks interesting and active and shows that this is open to boys and girls of all ethnic backgrounds. The expressions of the student on the webcam also suggest that this is an experience not to be missed. Red is a dramatic colour and its use seems to emphasise not only what the SSF does but also the exciting nature of its work. As well as learning these things from what is immediately revealed to us, we are shown other things that could be learnt at the click of a mouse. By following the appropriate links we could find out to audition, support the SSF as a private donor or register now, a link which is give particular emphasis through the vibrant use of red on black.
The average score for this text was 5 out of 8.
What score would you give this piece of text? ? out 8.
2. The flyer tells us that the festival is going on in October to November 2012 and that it has been around since 2010. We get lots of facts about the festival from the flyer, such as that it has a huge number of young people involved. This is good as we feel like we can be included because there are lots of people. The colours are bright which is effective as it gives us the idea that the charity is fun rather than boring. However there is a button that says ‘Support Us’ which suggests they are not doing very well or they would not need a lot of donations in the first place, and makes them seem desperate. What I learnt was that I would not like to take part as acting is not one of my hobbies.
The average score for this text was 6 out of 8.
