In October 2011, the FX Network renewed the series for a second season. In December 2011, series co-creator Ryan Murphy announced his plans to change the characters and location for the second season. The setting will be an institution for the criminally insane in the 1960s, with Jessica Lange's new character as the head of the asylum. It will be themed on sanity.
