I love Window 7!!!I have it on my desktop, but my laptop is Windows XP. I heard about the Free Windows 7 Conversion pack thingy. Is it worth all the risks to convert a laptop to windows 7??? I want Windows 7 on my laptop, but I dont want to screw it up.

Laptop Info:
Coby Netbook
Intel Atom
1gb Ram

I'm assuming that since it's free, it's illegal. And there is always a chance of problems with illegal software. If you don't know exactly what you are doing, I don't think it's a good idea. If you do go ahead and do it, however, BACK UP all you're important documents, files, etc... incase something does go wrong.

I would choose windows 7 starter if you have the choice, it will run the best on a computer of that level.

First off, you can't directly upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7, since there is another windows release in between them. This principle applies to any Operating system.
Secondly, I don't think that this pack is official, seeing that a retail copy of windows 7 is around 100 dollars last time I checked :P
However, since you are posting your specs, and talking about Windows, if you want to get a retail copy, I'd recommend Windows 7 Home Basic. It still has the functionality of Home Premium, but not as demanding as Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate.

He's not talking about actually upgrading to Windows 7. He's talking about Windows X's Windows Seven Transformation Pack: http://www.windowsxlive.net/seven-transformation-pack
It makes XP/Vista look like Windows 7, without actually upgrading to Windows 7.

@ the OP, as long as you perform a back up, then I see no reason as to why you shouldn't try it. Just keep in mind that some of the programs included with the pack, and some of the styles applied (Glass especially) may slow down your laptop to an almost unusable state.
If I remember right from when I used his Windows Vista transformation pack, everything that his pack does, can be undone fairly easily. But since it messes with extremely important system files, there's always an off chance of it messing something up big-time. Make sure you have a way to install Windows from a disk or USB key (Unless your laptop has a recovery partition, then just make sure you can access the recovery partition, and make sure it's working (Meaning: boot to it, but don't actually perform a factory reset)), just in case.

Yes, I've had that in the past to see how it feels to have a Windows 7 Machine before actually buying the OS. It fills your computer with loads of bloat, as in different applications contributing a small amount of making the computer look like Windows 7. You should buy the OS, if your computer supports it.

In my opinion, transformation packs are never like the real thing. While I can't say I've used the Windows 7 one, I've installed ones for Windows Vista many times, and they were always buggy and just cheap-looking. The only way you'll get the actual interface of Windows 7... is to buy Windows 7. It's a great operating system that's definitely worth the money.

Thats exactly what I was talking about, haha. I also read comments and stuff about it slowing down the pc really bad, and like screwing it up really bad. So, thats what really makes me not want to download it. I mean, I wanted W7 just to have something different on my laptop, but I dont want to risk screwing it up. So, I guess I wont do it, if its risking all of that.

I have a spare hardrive that runs ubuntu and there is a free version of windows 7 thats ubuntu based, now if there was a version of ubuntu that is windows based. that would be awesome. :)

Thats why I kept a Ubuntu live disk, I screwed up my newely fixed laptop when I tried the windows 8 conversion pack. I had a error saying "WIndows 7 is incompatible with windows 7 home premium" Or something like that so I had to restore some files I had backed up using the live disk. now windows 7 works perfectly fine :)
I'm curious about this KDE desktop app I found for windows Derp. (I'll probably murder my laptop by installing since my sis lost my moms flashdrive.
