This is a tough one, what I would do if I thought my girlfriend and I's relationship was ever not working, I would just talk to her and ask what she thinks and how she feels.

Long distance relationships require the highest amount of trust and communication, if you ask me. Trust because you only have their word to believe what they're actually doing. Communication because of the prior and there's no physical relationship. Long distance relationships CAN work, don't let anyone tell you they can't. Whether it's a good idea is up to you. Can you trust her while your back is turned? Can you two openly express how you feel without holding back? If the answer to both of these is yes, I'd say go for it.

take from someone who has had plenty of long distance relationships, it never works out and you just end up not talking anymore.

No its true you don't know, but you can ask its a good idea to have a conversation where you explain what you want and what you expect. For example you may want to speak every day and Skype once a week, and you may expect her not to associate with guys alone. Obviously this is just an example but this is the type of thing I mean discuss the boundaries and each of your wants. As for knowing if she complies its just on how much you trust her. If you trust her completely it shouldn't be a problem to believe what she says. If you don't trust her you need to work out why not and see what you can do.

Is this okay?

Only you can answer that if you're happy then its okay, if you agent happy then maybe its not. Long distance relationships aren't for everyone but they can be worth it in the end.

Take it from me, the master of long distance relationships.

They take a shit load of trust and commutation, as Gunter said. They usually will not work out unless you have a way you can both see each other. Whether is be a drive to visit them every few days, or whatever.
