I was wondering how many people here know anything about Autism?

I am helping out in an Autistic bowling league (they are young kids to teenagers) every thursday and wanted to know what you guys know about it. I mean I know there are plenty of books available.
Does anyone know of anyone who is diagnosed with Autism? And what is it like?

I know very little about it. Supposedly my cousin has a "undiagnosed" form. His mom never really got back to taking him to doctors and such. There are so many forms for this disease. I've helped out a couple of times all ready and such. It is very fun helping these people out and encouraging them! ^_^

I don't have a lot of experience with people who have autism, but from the few times I have, I've learned two things:

~Don't underestimate them- most of the kids I was with turned out to be much smarter than I had anticipated

~Always be ready to deal with anything. People with autism have different perceptions than people without it, so they could be feeling things much different than you or I.

I don't claim any expertise whatsoever, this is just based on a couple of times being with a group of kids with autism. Hope it helps :daisy:

Yes, thats what some of their parents kind of said : "Tell them, 'hey thats great, but maybe you could try it this way...' And they really will try their hardest to do it"

Which is true. And one of the autistic teens kind of liked me :P lol.

I have an autistic cousin. I visit him every once and a while. He's practically a genuis, but he can be hard to like or get along with most of the time. He's a nice kid, but being autistic he seems to care about things we ordinarily would never really notice so we think it's silly or stupid, but when I stop and think about what he's saying I realize that most of the time he has a point to the things that he says. We just aren't observant enough to realize it. So, pay close attention to what they say. You may think about it for 30 minutes and realize they came up with something there! It took you a "normal" person to think for half an hour to understand something that they the "wierd" thought of and noticed instantly. I love conversing with him because he veiws the world so differently and unique!
