Well, I don't wear a normal retainer, I didn't want anything in my mouth, so I went with this rubber mouthguard like thing that you only wear at night. My brother has a normal retainer and he had trouble talking for like two weeks and I remember that he couldnt really eat normally for about a week. It'll go away, the pain now is much better when you know that you dont have braces anymore! I had braces for 6 years, and I got them off three years ago and I wear my retainer every night. Sadly I have to get jaw surgery, becuase my top row of teeth are just an eye sore... Anyways, congrats on getting your braces off!!!

That's 100% normal, at least from what I experienced. It should go away, however if it doesn't I definitely recommend talking to your orthodontist.
I had the same problem with the speech thing, and sadly I can't tell you what will happen, because I chickened out of wearing it because of that, haha. I'm pretty sure though from what I've heard it will go away after a few days - a week. Again, if it doesn't stop definitely talk to your orthodontist.
Just make sure no matter what you wear it. No matter what, it's so much better than getting braces again. And eventually you'll probably graduate to only needing to wear it at night, which is awesome. I know it sucks.

SIX YEARS? I'd die if I had to go through that :eek::eek:
I will be getting one of those night ones once I'm through, though. I have less than a year to go.

It took me a week before I could speak normally without my braces.

It took me maybe 24 hours to speak normally? I dunno, I never had a real issue with it. Then again, I'd had a palatal expander so I was used to having funny things on the roof of my mouth for long periods of time.
I have two permanent retainers glued onto the back of my teeth and those don't cause me any problems. My removable retainer only made my teeth sensitive for a little while, it goes away just like if you got your braces tightened. Don't worry, it gets a lot easier.

I got my braces off in January of this year, and I talked funny for about a month after that.
