I'm just wondering if I will be allowed to use my iPhone 4S for music and games on Airplane Mode next month when I fly with Swiss Air...

Because I have heard this on many flights in the past if I can remember correctly - "All cellular devices are to remain switched off regardless of Airplane mode"
So I am unsure about it, I mean what's the point of it otherwise?

That rule would be specific to certain airlines, I assume. Certainly on every flight I've been on electronic devices must all be switched off during takeoff and landing when the seatbelt light is on, but if the airline doesn't highlight the existence of a rule regarding mobile phones and the like being prohibited even in flight mode, I would have thought it would be considered acceptable to use such a device (aeroplane mode enabled, obviously) during the flight.

EDIT: Here is Swiss Air's policy on the use of electronic devices in-flight:

Electronic devices may not be used during start, landing and taxiing when the fasten seat-belt signs are switched on.

Laptops, MP3 or CD players may be used during the flight. However, mobile telephones, radios and TV receivers, radio equipment and cordless computer mice may not be used during the flight.

It looks from this as though you couldn't use it, even in flight mode, unfortunately.

I had mine on when I went to Europe, I was using my phone and my laptop. Nobody said anything to me? It was on Continental though

Definitely! I've flown long-haul several times and leave it on flight mode - I've also forgotten to do that once for the entire flight.

Laptops and larger devices however, definitely not during take-off or landing. Every airline more or less has the same policies.
