Do what makes you happy and puts you on the right path for success in your life, there is a reason "it's called Starving Artist" - I hope to not be one..

Whether you're a 'sell-out' or a 'traitor' is contingent upon contextual and cultural significance.
I'd say it holds no bearing in a logical sense, in fact, it can actually prevent you from making rational decisions because it makes you feel you have some abstraction to prove to people.
So for instance (this is a very simple example), one could be faced with a scenario that involves you asking for help from someone you don't hold a modicum of respect for (based on some previous conflict), and that in congruence with rationality it is the preferable decision to make, however your pride may lead you to refrain from asking them.
These are constructed concepts that don't exist outside of human interaction/behaviourism and differ depending on the socio-cultural context of every country, region, neighbourhood and individual. Basically, a 'sell-out' is a very emotional definition that generally relates to disloyalty. Any treacherous act would depend on the context of the situation.
I'm not going to make a tl;dr for this.

To me, once you censor or hold back your creativity for money or recognition, then you are a sell out.
