Biking and running are 2 different sports. You have to work UP to running 10K. You can strengthen your legs all you want, but you probably won't see a modest increase in your running ability. Take it slowly since you're overweight and semi-active. Biking is considered a cross training activity. Try following the Couch-to-5K program http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml followed by a 10 K program like this one http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_4/138.shtml and you should be well on your way to running 6 miles! Runnersworld.com is a good website if you need some more tips. Work with your body and don't go the 'extra mile' if you don't have to.
