I have been admitted before, and I stayed for nine days. To be honest, it was one of the worst experiences in my life, but it was something that I needed, and though I would never admit it to my parents, it helped me a great deal.
It depends on the kind of place you go to, how the staff is, and the other patients, as to how your stay will be, and what it's like. The place I went to wasn't that bad, as scary as it was for me. If you would like to know more, or to talk, please send me an instant message as I'm not on here very much anymore.

my mom's been in mental hospitals quite a few times, and even though she doesn't stay "cured" for very long afterward, she does get better.
The main thing she complained about was being watched all the time and not having her medicine when she wanted it, it was very controlled release.
But bedroom eyes is right, it depends a lot on the people there. Where my mom stayed, they made her do different arts and crafts among other activities. Even though the stay is not pleasant, it's worth it.

Mental hospitals aren't the most pleasent of places but they do help.
