what is the point of having a jockstrap? is it any different than underwear?

It's mainly for sports. If you play a sport that involves a lot of running, it helps to hold your dick and balls close to your body. That way they don't flop around.

I wear one when I play soccer and everything stays in place. :)

As Pete said, it's most commonly used for people doing sports. It's more supportive than most types of underwear and it stops things flailing around and potentially hurting. Although some people do just like the comfort and security that it provides, so wear them just for that reason - personally I've never worn one.

Guys wear them for sports. I used to wear one but personally ever since compression shorts came out I stopped using them. Compression shorts are much comfier and (I think) offers better protection.

Jockstrap with a cup is for protection while playing sports. I wear one because it makes me horny. :D

Jockstraps and cups provide protection when playing sports so you don't squash and jostle your goods. I guess some people wear them for support. I've never worn one and don't play sports.... some people don't wear them for sports anymore and just use compression shorts.

Don't wear one while swimming cause, well extra drag....I had to wear one during baseball as a kid...they even had "cup checks" where you had to knock on your cup so they knew you had one....rather embarrassing actually everyone slapping their junk in front of everyone else....but they do provide more holding support when running and things...
