I hate it when people say that gay means happy. It's so demeaning. Maybe I'm looking into it too much, but you have to wonder that they're really saying to you with such a grandiose statement. Here's a scenario:

Me: hey, um, this is really hard for me to tell you, and I hope you still love me for who I am. I'm gay. You're the first person I've told.
Bitch friend: Me too!!! Gay means happy. Let's go be gay together! XD

*note: this didn't happen to me

I think what they're doing is taking a "dirty word" and using its archaic "clean" meaning. I always get a little offended by this. What do you think?

People use it for the word Bitch as well. I understand what you're saying and sometimes people use it just to be patronizing and it's childish really. In that situation then it's very disrespective and if it's a true scenario then i'm sorry that they handled it like that. Maybe they were shocked, joking about a serious topic is always easier than having to handle being mature for once. There really isn't much that you can do though apart from telling them how you feel about them 'misusing' it.

Gay is an uncommon word for happy pretty much. It's pretty much slang to use it to refer to a homosexual, but we use it that way anyway.

My opinion: Whatever.

It's used in a demeaning way but honestly, who cares?

How about this. Stop being offended. Gay has been a word for a long time, long before it was adopted as a synonym for homosexual. Gay originally meant happy, and that's all that can be determined. So when LGBT's get offended by the phrase "That's gay" it pisses me off personally. Get the fuck over yourselves. Who really knows when that phrase originated and if it's because of the affiliation with homosexuals.

I use the phrase, personally, with no harm intended towards homosexuals. Why? Because I know that words can have multiple meanings in different contexts.

I think that it's annoying, and people deliberately use the meaning that is not to be inferred by the context, but I also think that "happy" is an acceptable definition for the word "gay." Otherwise, Tom Sawyer would have a completely different meaning :P
