A private school community in Caboolture is in shock tonight after a 14-year-old girl was badly injured in a knife attack on school grounds.
The teenager alleged to have stabbed his ex-girlfriend a number of times at a Queensland high school has been charged with attempted murder after turning himself into police.
The 16-year-old handed himself in to Caboolture Police Station after the attack on a 14-year-old girl at St Columban's College this morning.
The girl had reportedly broken up with the 16-year-old on Facebook, news.com.au reports.
The school was put into lockdown and classes were cancelled after the student was stabbed in her head, neck and back in a toilet block at around 7.15am.
She was taken to the Royal Brisbane Hospital in a stable condition.
A police spokesman told AAP officers have found a knife they believe was used in the attack, which also left the girl with wounds to her forearms and hands. p>
Police say the girl and her attacker had gone to school early for sports training.
Inspector David Crawford-Raby said other pupils witnessed the attack.
St Columban's College principal Ann Rebgetz said staff had performed first aid in the injured student and others who witnessed the incident would be offered counselling.
"The other students are obviously quite distressed and some of them were there when it happened," she told reporters.
"The families have been contacted and we are very keen to support the families involved."
Federal Liberal MP Wyatt Roy said staff and students at the school, in his electorate of Longman, would have been shocked by the attack.
"This is obviously a very dark, difficult day for the school community and for the community at large," he told parliament on Wednesday.
"Our thoughts are with her family, with her friends and with the school."
The college will reopen as normal tomorrow.
