I drink about 4 liters of soda a day. I have stopped for a week, and this is the second time I have tried to stop. When I stop I feel like crap, so I am wondering how long would it take to get Diabetes, do you think, if I kept drinking 4 liters of soda a day? Or even if I brought it down to 2 liters a day?

Uh, no idea how long since it varies from person to person, but even if you didn't get diabetes, the soda would damage your body a LOT. Try not drinking so much, or if you're up for a challenge, not drinking any.

Ummm I'm fairly sure that's way too much

I drink no more than 2 soda cans a day and that's about .71 liters..

I mean, I know some people who drink like almost or all of a big soda bottle but that's 2 liters or less

So yeah, I think that you definitely need to cut down on your soda intake man. And also, I'm not sure how much it would take to get diabetes, since everyone is different

First off, you do not get Diabetes from drinking too much soda, that is an old wives tale...it is a combination of genetics and many other factors.

On the other hand, periodontitis is something you will have to look forward to if you keep this up...

Funny enough I have been to the dentist recently after years of heavy drinking of soda and I have no cavities, none whats so ever..I found it very weird, I went in there knowing I'd have one..but that's interesting, I didn't know that.

If you want to stop do it slowly because the way you put it you are addicted. You see some times if we use something to much are body depends on it after awhile so stopping all at once will cause something like tabacco withdraw. THE MORE YOU KNOW

And that's why I don't drink soda, Dimitri. That and I hate anything carbonated.

I recommend gradually cutting down and investing in Listerine.

Rogue, I have been using listerine for years. Well not listerine per say but mouth wash in general. And I do know that I am addicted, I won't deny that. But it makes me happy and right now I feel like without it I will kill someone. It's not the time to quit just yet but when things calm down I might try it. But I'm not going to let quitting run my life because if it makes me happy then that's all that I need. Happiness is hard to find in the world now, at least for me anyway.

I used to drink way too much pop. I haven't had any pop since december 2010 and plan to keep it that way. My new addiction is 100% pure orange juice with extra pulp.

FYI, the reason you feel like crap when you stop is because you have a caffeine addiction. The same is true for coffee drinkers. Try sticking it out for at least a month and I guarantee you you'll feel better.

Dude I have sat through soft drinks and energy drink lectures in a few of my sport medicine courses. Excluding the fact that you are Nuking your body with sugar (A HELL OF A LOT OF SUGAR), the effects on your insides is pretty scary. You should have no more than 3 cans a day. A sports trainer like me would say zero, but that is unrealistic. Did you know a ingredient in Pepsi (Just one example), before it is mixed with the other stuff, is used to burn down concrete and stone.

Having this much in the long run is putting your chase of getting heart disease up by a scary and unnecessary large percentage. In the short term, your are affecting your blood glucose levels, blood pressure and consuming way too much calories which will affect your intake of other important minerals and foods. Calcium is one of these, and at your age can lead to Osteoporosis in your older years. Not even going to start on teeth.

As for stopping, caffeine is a drug. Its a stimulant, and can become addictive like every other drug. The best way to stop is cut down, a little bit each week. Going from a large amount to zero is going to affect your body of course. You are used to the amount. Cut down and try to limit yourself. Don't buy it or tell your parents not to buy alot.

Sorry if I was too direct, but you need to take action and responsibility and watch your health. God Bless.

I have tried to get addicted to other things but to be honest the drinks around here other than soda are more expensive. Milk is 4 dollars, water is 4 dollars..soda is 85 cents..and I am a college student so I don't have the money for anything that expensive the way I drink it. But I'll try to cut down, thanks guys. I actually did cut down to 12 oz once a day when I was in a health class several years ago. Some kind of challenge to keep what you love limited. As soon as the class was over that quickly stopped. But is this not better than drinking this much alcohol or smoking an equivalent to cigarettes?

I don't drink soda period. Basically for all of the reasons stated above. The last time I had soda was about three weeks ago when I went out to dinner, but thats really it. It's terrible for your teeth, and insides, as stated above.

Wow 4ltrs ehy. that's something... I was going to suggest latching onto milk. its what I'm doing. but you say its expensive. but water should be 4$ that's just crazy... what about tap water.. hasn't killed me yet and the water round here is pretty bad.. lol. not much I can suggest its more of a time think than anything. I don't recommend orange or fruit juice my dentist is forever warning me to have a glass but that's it. or just eat fruit. its too concentrated

Not only what people have said above, but it also deteriorates your bones, making them more prone to beaking. I also can't imagine you going without kidney damage with how much you say you drink.

I highly recommend you slow down. To almost a complete stop.

Yes, one sip is too much. Soda is very bad for you, I recommend stopping drinking that much.

..I drink about 4 cans a day. But 4 liters? Cut down on it. Slowly.

Say it's "very very very bad" but to say one sip is? That's a bit over the top don't you think? With everything that goes into our bodies soda is not that dangerous. You know how toxic the air you are breathing right now is? I do. Hell even formaldehyde is in toothpaste. I understand the amount I'm drinking is a bit excessive and I am doing my best to cut down on it. It helps me cope with stress so I do need at least a little bit of it. But don't be too extreme about it. There are a lot worse things around us than soda.

I'd say cut it down. Maybe to one or two cans a day as a start. 4 liters a day is not only unhealthy, but costly. I drink normally a can a day, sometimes more, sometimes I don't drink any. The amount of shit in soda, really is bad in high amounts. One or two cans a day won't kill you though. Oh, and as for feeling like crap when you try to quit, you're going through a withdrawal. Both a caffeine and sugar withdrawal to be specific. Simple solution, deal with it. After a few days it will go away (also still having one to two cans will help lower the effect).

It may be a physical addiction but I think I'm also psychologically addicted.
