View Full Version : Is it Just Me?

Okay so I go to a public school, and have nothing against that(though more funding would be nice). I also consider myself to be a Christian. Here's where my problem comes in: why would there be a senior award for FCA? For those of you who don't know, FCA is "Fellowship of Christian Athletes". These awards are paid for by the county and given out. What I don't understand is how the county can fund all these religious things - there are more instances on top of this award - and get away with it? And on top of that, they cut funding for academic classes like Latin, where people want to try hard and have a future. Does no one else see that this isn't constitutionally supported? Is it just me?

If they gave it a new name, would you be happy?

Hmm, never heard of that reward, that is kind of bull shit I guess. I bet they don't have a FIA.

It's not about the name, it's the blatant integration of church and state. Whatever I get that a lot of people are Christian, but all this blending of religion and government just doesn't make me feel comfortable.

You're right, the FCA should fund itself and pay for its own awards. Now, the reason why it's not a big issue in your area is probably because you either live in a more religious part of the country, or they don't really spend much money on the FCA and people just don't care.

Even though this sort of funding is basically prohibited by the Constitution, the issue only really comes up when someone points it out. If your jimmies are truly rustled by this violation of separation of church and state, you could bring it up with the school district and your local ACLU chapter.

Funding cuts definitely aren't new to any part of the country. It's definitely annoying how school districts (mine included) seem to be putting sports and other non-academic programs over teacher salaries, classroom supplies and academic extra-curriculars.

they need to split the budget equally to balance things out and raise budgets for diferant things as neccessary.

I agree. It's totally ridiculous that the FCA has priority over things that people could actually have a career in.

1. Latin is a dead, uselss language. Give me 46 good reasons otherwise of you disagree.

2. Is there an Atheist Athletes Award? How about Muslim Athletes? Or maybe even Christian Laziness Award?

learn how to spell *if

Many english words are latin based so if you learn latin you will have a better understanding of english words. Latin may be a dead language but it is far from useless

there are many phrases in latin still actively used so you could better understand them if you know latin

46 is an outrageous number of good reasons many people would consider 2 or 3 enough

Et tu, boonsim?

Yeah, a language that's the basis for large chunks of the English language and is still used in fields like taxonomy and by organizations like the Catholic Church is "useless". You didn't even give a single reason why Latin is useless, and then you ask us for forty-six reasons why it isn't? That's what I call an argument.

1. Get that pole out of your butt.
2. Latin is the basis for 60% of the English language, not to mention all those big words professionals use.
3. Latin is the base of all the Romance languages, e.g., French, Italian, Spanish, Romanian, etc.
4. Es stercus, meretrices.
5. Why are you getting all upset?
