View Full Version : David Cameron: The time for gay couples to marry has come.

Following claims by the Mail on Sunday that the Tory Chief Whip, Patrick McLoughlin told MPs that proposals for equal marriage will be “kicked into the long grass”, the Prime Minister has used a pre-local election interview to reaffirm his commitment to the cause.

The Mail on Sunday claimed that Mr McLoughlin privately assured anxious Tory backbenchers that the current proposals for equal civil marriage in England and Wales will “not come to a vote,” and that they will be “kicked into the long grass.”

Today, David Cameron told the Evening Standard that he is “clear about my views” on the issue. He said:“I ask myself the question, why is it that we deny gay couples the ability to get married, and I don’t think that’s right.

Recognising the heated debate on the subject within his own party and the Church, Mr Cameron said: “Obviously this is a controversial issue. I feel the time for change has come. If you ask, particularly young people, they say this feels like a very natural change to make … We are not changing what happens in church.”

When questioned on the role of the Church of England in the debate and his role in the appointment of the successor of the next Archbishop of Canterbury, the newspaper wrote that the prime minister “suddenly looks genuinely upset”. He told the paper: “I have said enough. I don’t want to start getting into a fight with the Church. The Conservative Party has been on a journey to where all small-c institutions go, in a modern world, which is that if marriage is good for heterosexuals it is good for gay couples too.”

Asked if he is worried if he’d lose support to UKIP, criticised by PinkNews.co.uk for its approach to homosexuality, Mr Cameron said: “I am a heartfelt Conservative. The reason I wanted to lead the Conservative Party was that I felt it needed to make important changes, to broaden the base of its support.”

Last year at the Conservative Party conference, Mr Cameron said: “I stood before a Conservative conference once and I said it shouldn’t matter whether commitment was between a man and a woman, a man and another man or a woman and a woman.

“You applauded me for that. Five years on, we’re consulting on legalising gay marriage.

“And to anyone who has reservations, I say this: Yes, it’s about equality, but it’s also about something else: commitment. Conservatives believe in the ties that bind us; that society is stronger when we make vows to each other and support each other.

“So I don’t support gay marriage in spite of being a Conservative. I support gay marriage because I am a Conservative.

Something I found interesting. I was kinda shocked as for a long time this has been a major taboo in parliament.

It's still illegal here. However it seems this could be changing within the next few years.

Shit. I usually never approve of anything the Tories do, I'm actually surprised that the leader of a conservative party has brought this up.

The thing is, when it comes to a lot of social issues like thing. It's usually to rally support for said political party.

I can't say this is a bad thing. This probably will get him some support. I found it odd though that he suddenly decided to make such a statement.

I think this could possibly be a PR stunt after hearing and reading about the queens speech when she read out the plans for the CON government. No mention of gay marriage in it.

So Cameron finally does something right.

He hasn't done anything yet. We know what politicians are like - they say things which appeal to the mass audience which are politically correct. While this seems like a great step forwards for the UK, which I hope it genuinely is, I'm sceptical to appreciate he means business until we see that something has actually been done.

The Conservatives suffered quite a lot in the elections just gone by, and their only real success was keeping Boris Johnson as the Mayor of London. Other than that, they lost a massive load of support across the UK. Labour are slowly making their way back up to the top. The Conservatives know they need to regain support, which is why they're now starting to make bold statements like these which appeal to people who have felt constantly rejected, such as homosexuals. The LGBT community may be relatively small in proportion to the country's population, but it's this kind of support which can put the Conservatives back on top. As Tescos (the UK supermarket) would say, 'every little helps'. :P

Cameron does not have my support until we actually see change. His silver tongue doesn't win me over just yet.

I agree with the statement made to the Matrix above.

However I don't this will come through while David C is in power as it was mentioned yesterday when out charming queen read out what is to be expected with upcoming 2 years.

He made this statement then found perhaps he facing a large opposition against it and realized it could possibly do more damage to his political party success than it being beneficial.

Long story short if he even said he would tackle it in a second term of office would I vote for him? Nope. One right in my opinion does not warrant a dozen wrongs. However we all have our own stance in terms of political parties.

Ugh. This.. so much this.
Really pisses me off. Especially with all the promotion they're doing on the radio right about now. Talking about how urgent it is that they need people to donate blood, especially people that are O-, I've got that blood type and you won't even take it from me because I like other men.

I found it odd though that he suddenly decided to make such a statement.

It wasn't sudden. The issue has been in discussion for years now, and there was actually a consultation about it in March this year. Cameron's statement wasn't just an out of the blue remark.

Alas though the queens speech where she read out all his plans and upcoming things, gay marriage was not on said list.
