View Full Version : A Minor Suggestion for Reputation

Well you know how no names show up when people give you rep I think this should be changed. However it should only be changed to give the names when positive reputation is given. Therefore we avoid negative reputation wars and see when people give you positive reputation.
I think this would be a good idea because it would allow you to be able to thank the people who gave you positive reputation.
This suggestion is for positive reputation only because it would be clear that if done for negative reputation it would cause rep wars. (Just wanted to make that clear)
Failing that could it then be possible to turn on comment required for positive reputation? y'know like we have for negative reputation because currently you can just hit "I approve" and then hit okay. At least this way they could give you a comment because right now they don't even have to give you that.
I know it's probably not greatly needed but I thought I would just make a suggestion.

Some members like to keep themselves anonymous, so what's the problem?
I don't think everyone should be able to see who gave positive rep of they don't want to be seen.
If they did, they'd sign it.

Exactly. I certainly wish I could know who gave me rep, so that I could thank them, but in the end it's their choice whether or not to sign it.

Well I can easily track down those who gave me rep, positive or negative. It doesn't always work, but most of the time it does.
Say, you got rep for your post at "A" thread at 09:35. I go to the thread, see who posted at the time near 09:35 and find the person.
Of course, this doesn't work if that person didn't post anything at all.

I sign my rep if it's good rep. Last time I signed a bad rep, that person came back with an "I hate you" on something that didn't deserve it. I think that anonymity is fine, and if a person wants to sign, ok too.

If someone gives you an unjust rep (revenge rep, etc) then you can report it and it could be removed.
I don't think rep show names. If people want you to know, they'll sign it, and if they don't then they won't. Simple as that.

I have signed every one of my reps since about December.
But, yes. If the names show up, then people would think a few times before actually putting that rep down, for example if it was something like "lol this sucks." or "ew go away."
ya dig?

I sign all rep, but my rep is turned off, so it doesn't really count towards anything.

or you could just sign your rep like most people including me do

I think this would be a good idea as it would encourage positivity around the forum, but I'm guessing the Admin response would be
"No, since users can decide whether or not they show they names or not, and this would force them when positive rep is given."

You say that like it's a ridiculous statement. I don't know the admins' opinion yet but that's my view on it.
It's not needed enough. You can easily see who gave you rep by either a) seeing that they signed rep or b) Going to the thread and seeing who posted around the time rep was given
Or, you can just take the neg rep, shrug it off since rep is not that big of a deal, and if it really bothers you-- have it removed.
Added to that, it wouldn't completely eliminate the already near-insignificant problem we're discussing in the first place. Doing this would mean not including a place to write a comment because a sig can be left, but what if somebody wants to justify the neg rep they gave?
I think it's fine how it is, but once again it's up to the admins.

Lol, I never fail to see an atrocious attitude from you, and I really am so sick of it. You're not above anybody here, so stop acting like it.
I think the more realistic reason why it could possibly be a "no" is due to the fact that rep is meaningless, pointless and for the most part stupid. Rep makes everything a popularity contest, which isn't exactly what it's real purpose is. It's an additional part of the site, which isn't well-liked by a lot of members, and could be taken away whenever due to the fact. I don't think and additions need to be implemented to the rep system, as it's fairly controversial and fairly pointless in the first place.

A reason I would suggest not to implement this is not only what Mike has said that the system has been functional in this way for several years and there is simply no need for change, but also that adding names to reputation comments would just make 'rep-backs' more likely. i.e. when people are repped for absolutely no reason, simply because someone else repped them. It inflates the system and there's no real point in that; people can choose whether they want to be kept anonymous or not. That works best for them and it works best for the system in general.

there is absolutely no reason for this, people seem to fail to realize that the entire point of this rep system was that it works as a thank you system. Not that I want that as it would turn out to be another hierarchy that would become even dumber than the reputation system and if it was decided, the entire reputation system would be done away with. As you can see by the number of threads that you can see in the VT HQ as WELL as the number of PM's I receive and the threads made in the white padded room is that people take it so seriously. Its that sense of power people think they have and I'm really sick and tried of seeing and hearing about it.
The weight people put on reputation completely blocks out the point of the rep system and from the comments that I've seen people give, it absolutely disgusts me, some people rep because they get repped, whether positive or negative, it's like people think its a game, "tit for tat".
There is absolutely no way I would allow this, as I said if there is anything to be done with reputation, it would be to do away with it and I certainly don't appreciate the snide comments assuming that I'm going to say something that I am certainly not. You know what happens when you assume, you make an ass out of you and me. Think about this practically and realistically, you're supposed to be here to get help, feel better about yourself and your situation, give help and have fun. This is not supposed to be some kind of E-Penis game where reputation shows how popular you are because a lot of people that have high rep on this site, don't deserve it anyway.

Just on a side note, unless it has changed since I was last on staff, staff members can see who repped them, positive or negative. However as previously stated the rep system nowadays is mostly a popularity contest, and a "I scratch your back you scratch mine" game, but that being said there are still members who use the rep system for its intended use, to positively reinforce a post that works toward the betterment of the site and VT community, in whatever form one may percieve that to be.
Just my 2 cents.

Well thanks for the feedback on the suggestion. I know rep is not important, I just thought it would be an idea. I guess this could be locked now, as the answers have been great and informative.
