I hope that this is the appropriate place for a discussion on this. I am just curious and would like to hear what people in the forum think. So my question is....
Why do you think most people become defensive when receiving criticism and what strategies do you think are effective in overcoming this reaction?

It really depends on the person. Everyone has their own answers to this but I would have to say that they are afraid of being wrong, and when they are wrong, they will try to push the facts to make it seem like it is the right one.

Well, it depends how the criticism is given. If a person is proud of their 'accomplishment' and a person belittles it, of course a person will brindle at it.
