Personally in my opinion asking is so...awkward unless u are having a (dare i say it) intimate moment. Example...you two laying under the stars at night in a park or something. just say "I want to kiss you..." dont ask lol but dont force urself onto her. If she says something positive then go for it. If she says something negative...don't sue me because i'm not responsible for any outcome.

I've actually found it gentleman-like when a guy has asked to kiss me. It shows consideration.
IMO it's more likely to be awkward if you just blurt out "I want to kiss you..." and wait for a response.
