I've been thinking of this for a long time now. I feel that I am wasting my time in high school and I have read online that, if you're smart enough, it is possible to drop out, get a GED, and go to higher education. I am very intrigued and I've read on the GED test and I am very good at all the things that it listed. I read online that many people that can do this, do it. I am turning sixteen in a month, and I am thinking of finishing tenth grade and trying this out.

Any advice? Suggestions? I just don't want to waste my time in an environment where I feel that I am not learning.

You cant drop out at sixteen, you can at seventeen.

But my advice is to stay at school. You may hate it but trust me one of my friends regret it.

So why do you want to drop out in the first place?

I just don't like the high school environment. I feel like I am learning nothing new or interesting, and I want to pursue my own separate interests and actually learn.

Lol I know how that feels but honestly.. I have no idea how the US system works... But I do know how the real world works.

So whatever you do make sure you have a back up option even if it's just a high school degree...

It's great you have your own interests and will to learn but just make sure those things are actually worth something and more importantly that you can pursue them in the future.

If you aren't learning what you "want" see if another high school in the area will. If not, deal with it.

Try taking harder courses. You say you're smart enough to move on to a higher education now, why not just take more rigorous classes? You might find out that you actually aren't ready for classes above what you're currently in. If you're already in the harder courses though, see if you can move up any more levels.

Friends. One of the things that seems to keep me going through high school is the friends I have. Everyday, I go to school and see my friends, which normally brings the highlight of the day. Also, being social in all of your classes is not a bad thing, even if it's to someone you would not hang out with outside of the school building. You're stuck there, why not make some small talk in between.

Extra-curricular activities. I not only go to school for the eight hours a day everyone is required, but I stay an extra two hours most days, some even more. Currently, I'm staying at school until 10 PM every night, for no pay, mind you. Why? I'm involved in technical theatre. You know, the people who make the sets for shows and stuff like that (that's the tl;dr version). It's what I love to do, and if it wasn't for going to my high school, I might never have found that passion. It's now what I plan on doing after high school/college.

I think dropping out is a terrible idea for almost everyone. For you, it sounds like you just want a way out. Not a good enough reason for me to say it's justified for you. High school can very easily be anybody's best four years of their young life, but unless you put in a good amount of effort and a good attitude you won't get anything good out of it.

One of my previous principals (back in the 1990s) once said "You take what you leave." This is a completely true statement. If you put a lot into high school, you'll take a lot from it.

Ya, stay in school. Trying to get a job that pays decently without a high school degree is borderline impossible, you will be the lowest consideration when applying.

Ask your parents what they think. In all honesty, a lot of people look down and those who drop out of high school. You can't do certain things with just a GED.
