I am a sophomore in a 4A high school. The last time I checked my rank I was in the top 6 percentile. This was near the beginning of the year. This year has been very challenging for me, and I'm most liked going to have straight Bs at the end of the school year as my final averages. This is very upsetting, as I'm an A student. Anyways, I heard my counselor say once that one bad year does not throw your rank off too badly. Is this true? I'm still worried. I'm in all AP classes. And when I took the SAT in 7th grade I got a pretty good score, also I got one of the highest PSAT scores in my grade this year. Is this enough to get me into college, if I knock Junior year out of the park? How worried should I be about the straight Bs? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much

It sounds like you're doing amazing in school.. b's are still above average, so you should have nothing to worry about. Especially with the good sat / psat scores. Yes, it's plenty to get you into a college, and a good one at that.

Do you think I can keep my top 6th percentile status? Even with the Bs?

I'm not sure how competetive your school is, so i'm not sure. If you have a good lead on the people behind you then you're probably fine. Still though, anything in the top 10th percentile is pretty good.

Straight Bs is seriously gonna hurt you, especially in sophomore year; freshman year would be better since colleges don't look at that one too hard. Still, Junior year and Senior year count way more, so make sure to demolish those. With all ap classes your gpa will probably still be a 4.something, but that doesn't really count for anything because colleges don't look at it; they just look at your grades themselves. More than the letter itself, make sure you know the material so that, when you build on it next year, you can get As. Remember, if you finish AP classes this year and take either courses at a college or different branches of the same subjects, you're going to need a strong foundation. Extra-curricular activities are really important for college too.

Aside from all that, don't worry too much about it man. IMO, if you rock the next two years, you'll be fine getting into a good school. But it does make a difference what kind of Bs they were.. 89.6%= it's more than fine, but 80% probably not so much lol.

Where do you want to go, anyway?

Straight B's aren't going to kill you, especially in your sophomore year. Still, depending on where you want to go for college, you might have issues. When I was trying to get into boarding school I had to quit everything and work hard because I needed straight A's to get in...

I really want to get into the nursing program at UT in Austin. So I need to be in at least the top 8th percentile. So what my counselor told me was false? Because she said freshman year is when you set your foundation, then Junior year is the the year that makes or breaks you. I do a lot of community service as well, and as far as extra-curriculars go I'm in Varsity Choir.
