Safe to shut down?

So I just noticed that something was up with the battery...I hovered over that little icon thing in the taskbar, and it told me that I should consider changing my battery and since there's a problem with it my computer might suddenly shut down.

would it be safe to shut down and restart? Something similar happened to my old laptop. The battery icon had an x over it and I think it said the battery was missing or something...I decided to restart the computer...and that was the stupidest thing you could ever do, because I ended up never being able to get back on, and therefore losing everything.

It's not the exact same now, but I don't want to risk restarting the computer in case I can never get back on.

I'm going to tell my dad about this and hope he can change the battery...I don't know if he even has extras OR how much they would cost o_o

For compatible batteries of Amazon or other trusted websites, they cost around 25-40 pounds, and for original batteries they cost a hell of a lot more, like £70. If you're scared about losing data, use box or dropbox to upload important files, or use a USB flash drive.
