or consists of less talented artists?
a lot of people that annoy me are fans of really "heavy" music that lable pop shallow or manufactured without knowing a thing about it.

what's your opinion?

personally, i think it's just the other way around, because pop can express more than most heavy rock can, and can venture more topics while still creating a genuinely likable solid song.

The answer is that it obviously depends. I'm objectively going to say that anyone that doesn't say depends doesn't have an open minded opinion on music. Obviously there will be some pop (take into consideration the huge amount of subgenre's of this genre) centered music that's more "powerful, showing of 'emotions', bla bla" and there's also some "rock centered" music (which is a very vague thing considering that there's over a HUNDRED sub-genre's in rock alone) that can be more "powerful, showing of 'emotions', bla bla".

If you don't know much about genre's then I suggest you look upon the RYM list of music genre's here. (http://rateyourmusic.com/rgenre/) It's larger than you could ever imagine.

They BOTH have the POTENTIAL.

And they both can suck. Really badly. Some of my favourite music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMThz7eQ6K0&ob=av3e) is rock. And some of my least favourite music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXvmSaE0JXA) falls into the pop category. On the other hand, I've heard pop music that has made me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFwmKL5OL-Q) think twice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBcXe2B97TQ), while there's a lot of rock I'd like to shoot myself (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=312Sb-2PovA&feature=related) in the head (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VMFdpdDYYA) after listening to.

However, if you look at the concentration of generally "good" pop music and generally "good" rock music, there's a higher percentage of "good" rock music. Of course, I have no evidence, as no one will agree with what I think makes solid music (notice the absence of "good," my personal tastes aside as much as possible). But I think there's no limit to the capabilities of either genre. It's just that pop as a genre is a business even more so than other genres so there's a lot of distributing shit for the sake of money.

And we're not even talking about when pop and rock overlap (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlMEGBsw6j8). Which, in that case, I actually think pop rock sucks more than general pop...

TBH, I think the reason more people think pop music is "shallow" is because its the most popular form of music right now. People judge "mainstream" music too harshly because
1. They feel like they're different because they listen to forms of music the majority doesn't...
2. People are exposed to A LOT of bad pop music nowadays with no meaning, but i can bet you there is equally as much bad rock music out there, if you look for it. Also pop music has drowned itself in so many things irrelevant to the music itself trying to be "new and innovative" and thats what too many people see.

But I agree with you that people are WAY too quick to judge genres like this

I think of course it depends. In my own experience though, it is pop that tends to be a lot more shallow. But it wouldn't be fair for me to say that all rock isn't shallow (because of course, it isn't) and it wouldn't be fair to say all pop is shallow.

Most of pop is lyrical garbage in my opinion. And even a lot of rock. But it seems like pop is slowly showing some alternative influences (which is more tasteful and has richer lyrics IMO) artists like Adele and Gotye (I think he's considered pop) are piping up and actually singing about something that is worth while. It's not about what's going on in the club or how good some girl looks or some really shallow subject. It's becoming deemed than it used to be.

But what do YOU find in pop music? That's really all that matters. What you find to be "good" or not. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
