Just a question that popped up in my head the other day should teens have to pay for there first car? And by car I mean EVERYTHING like the car, the insurence, gas, and any repairs. I think they should in my opinion I just feel that they should have to WORK for something as big as a car instead of having Momy dearest buying it for you. But that's just me.

Agreed, but that doesn't mean the parents can't assist, but the teen should pay for the majority, unless he absolutely can't.

It should be up to the parents, honestly.

Well it depends. If the kids NEED the car for a job and stuff, then the parents should buy it. If the kid just wants it to cruise around and doesnt have a job, then they should pay for it.

My car was bought by my Dad, but I NEED it for work and to go out and see him. I also work quite a few jobs. In a few months, I will start paying for most of my gas, most of my insurance, and any other repairs needed. I don't have to pay for it now because I'm too young to be paying for that.

I think that parents shouldnt just give their kids a car. the kids should have to do something as compensation for a car if their parents are paying for it. Like my parents expect almost perfect grades and i do most of the chores around the house and my parents have agreed to pay for my car. I also got an almost full ride scholarship to college so with the money my parents are saving they are happy to pay for it.

I would say yes, but not for the whole car, but the majority.

It depends most parents have some form of money for there child when they come of age. so it begs the question. In this case does the parent not pay for it

I don't know. It depends on the situation. If the teen has a steady job, and can pay for gas, insurance, ect, then they should have to pay for those at least. The car itself I don't think so. Cars can be very expensive and teens may not be able to afford it, and getting a loan can turn messy very quickly.

Most teens should have a job anyways. They should pay for the gas, insurance, repairs, ect.

It depends on the parents and what they want. Nobody can parent another persons child. Personally, I will try to pay some of it - and if I can - a majority of it but I know that i'll need help... and I doubt my parents will care, they help my other brothers so they'll likely help me.

Teens should pay for their own car, but of course the parents can help and pitch in a little if they really need help. I'm not talking about a teen who needs money for a car because they spend alot of it on video games and electronics. If a teen (or young adult, rather) is paying for college and is on a budget.

I paid for my 1st car, paid for the gas and repairs, inspection/tax also. I didn't pay for insurance
I've had a number of cars since then (like 7) and I pay for everything now.

If the kid is working, and trying really hard to pay for a car, but they can not afford a basic car and insurance etc.. the parents should pitch in (if they can) If the kid is just lazy about it the parents should be also.

The teen pays for the car/truck, Dad & Mom pitches in some money to help finish what he don't have. Then Dad & Mom Pays for Insurance :D Sounds good?

The thing is we are trying to merge every teen family as the same.

When we know perfectly well we all come from other backgrounds.

I think overall its something that gets discussed on an individual basis with teen and parent.

We cannot generalise this and say everyone should or everyone should not.

I agree with this, or should they meet the teen half way, match his amount i they can.

If teens can't use correct capitalisation, maybe they shouldn't be criticizing other people's grammar.

Anyway, as others have said, I think it should be up to the parents. I'm getting my parents old car when I learn to drive, and my parents will pay for insurance, but once that's covered repairs and petrol etc will be my responsibility.

generally 16, but I'm thinking it varies state to state, so it may be 15 somewhere else...

as for the OP, I think the teen should pay especially if s/he has a job, but it should be split between the teen and parents until the teen can do all of it.

Wait how can you need a car if you don't even have your license? You're 15 right?

If its more convenient for the kid to have a car for school and sports and work and such, then the parents should definitely buy it.

I started saving for buying a car when i was 12/13, lol. A bit each month meant I had enough to afford a decent car and any repairs that needed doing. I ended up buying a very cheap 2008 Ford Focus at the start of 2010, however it wasn't road worthy but after repairs etc it was perfectly fine. I had help from my dad to fix the repairs and shit but ultimately i bought the car myself.

14 in South Dakota. The rest of the states are usually 16 or 15. Some are older than that.

I think the burden shouldn't be completely on the kid. I think it is more important for a student to focus on his studies rather than get a job. In my city, if you don't have a car you won't be able to go anywhere, unless you want to be run over. If the kid has to buy the car himself he is going to be more focused on the car he gets rather than safety, or at least that's my thought, so why shouldn't the parents help buy a newer car that is going to be safer? Frankly it is highly likely for us teens to be in crash, so I think it is worth it for the parents to help. It is important too to teach kids about money, but I think that can be taught through making teens buy smaller things with their own money.

My mom says I'll appreciate it more if I buy it ratherthan her just handing me a car. it would be added to her ins policy and I'm sure she'll hep with some gas money here and there but the rest will be up to me
