So my family are all Italian, and most of my dads friends are Italian. So whenever we all see each other we hug and stuff. But I always try to avoid it cause idk in what way I should hug them. Should I hug them and pat them on the back, what should I do, and how can I hug them without it becoming awkward?

I have witnessed this myself, when I stayed in Italy a long time ago.
I would say if it is family its usually a longer more intimate hug. However if it is an acquaintance or a friend it is usually a brief and quick hug.
Possibly the only person who thinks it is awkward is you. They might find it normal. Judge the situation carefully and when the time comes just go with the flow. You might find it is actually much more easier than you think and then you will laugh at this and think "Why was I panicking?".
Hope this helps

Well I see people do like pats on the back or whatever when they hug, and I do like an actual hug sometimes but I do it fast.

I don't see what's awkward to be honest, I hug people a lot, I don't care who, people know that's how I am ^_^

Your asking the type of hug?
I don't understand. If it's family most people tend to do it quick but like intimate if a friend then you do it quick almost like your giving a friendly hello probably with a pat on the back.
It depends we don't know your family or friends you do.

Just relax, don't tense up or show that you're nervous because people will be able to tell. Stop when they stop so you don't cone away to early. Usually boys do the pat on the back which you can if you want but don't stress over it so much. Just do what reels right

I have hugged other guys, mostly out of happiness of a win or a game or sadness at a funeral, but it wasn't awkward. It was okay. It's only awkward if you want it to be.

Yeah, it's just family. No one will take it awkwardly. Is it just hugging with your Italian ancestry? Cause that's how my melting pot of a family greets each other as well. Even when I see my second cousin twice removed or however the hell I'm related to these people (I haven't seen you since you were barely taller than my knee! ...and who are you?) I see people worry the most about cultures that greet each other by kissing more than I see worries about hugging. I know I can't speak from experience as I don't get the issue with guys and hugging but I have a very dear friend who is half Puerto Rican and half Spanish and whenever I visit it's usually her mother, an aunt, and her grandmother sitting around watching Spanish soap operas. I've never really had a friend of ancestry like that whose family I had met so it took a lot of getting used to, to get hugged and kissed six times (arriving and leaving) by people I barely knew whenever I'd visit her. You just have to see it as a normal thing. Nothing to be really anxious about. I'm actually more anxious shaking hands than I am hugging as a greeting. Shaking hands has so much to think about! How firmly should I grip their hand? How long should I shake their hand? Up and down continuously or firmly once? And that eye contact freaks me out. That's probably why I hate job interviews like I do. Other than the interview itself.

I hug mates all the time.
Apparently this is socially unacceptable?

What's awkward about hugs? I love hugs. You should too. :)
