have a really bad kidney infection and I'm being hospitalized...

I'm really hated being in hospital

1. I don't handle pain really well.
2. I do not like needles. And the IV they gave me is already no fun.
3. I hate wearing this gown thing. its very embarrassing and I feel exposed
4. The doctor says they are going to put in a catheter. What is that? And will it hurt?
5. How long do you think I will be in here?

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

It depends on what the pain is caused from, but with things like IVs you should be able to request a local anesthetic. The hospital gown you'll probably have to put up with, but again you might be able to wear front-opening clothes of your own, such as a dressing gown. Catheters - you can read the uses of catheters and what they look like here. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catheter#Uses) As it's your kidneys I'll assume it's going to be the second one on that list. I've never had one so I don't know if it hurts or not, sorry.
They will discharge you when you're safe to go and you no longer need to be in as an inpatient, I'm not sure on this either, but the longest I've ever been in was two weeks when I'd gotten cellulitis in my foot.
I've never had anything wrong with my kidney, really.

Best of luck :)

the catheter was so embarrassing and uncomfortable. There goes me wearing any underwear or shorts under this hospital gown. I am stuck wearing this gown for awhile. Now they want me to get up and take a walk. I don't want people seeing my backend when I walk and a nurse holding a bag of my pee:(

Ouch Ive had to wear the gown but it didnt really bother me. I would tell the nurse about your concerns, they are usually accepting unless you get one of the few in a bad mood. The IV is necessary. Try to wear like a dressing gown with the hospital gown. Hope you get better soon :)

Do talk to the people, both the doctors and nurses - they may not volunteer all the information you want but they should explain things if you ask.

Regarding pain don't suffer in silence. Particular if you are in pain after the op summon a nurse and ask for some pain relief. Some things they will be able to give you themselves, other may need a doctors signature but you may find the doctor has already prescribed you pain relief ready for when you ask.
