The South Korean Defense Ministry says North Korea launched a long-range rocket at 7:39 am local time on Friday.

CNN has also reported that the Pentagon has confirmed that North Korea fired the missile and there are also reports saying that the missile broke up shortly after launch. If those reports are true, it didn't get that far.

North Korea says the aim of the launch was to put a satellite into orbit - a move marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of national founder Kim Il-sung.
But the US and other nations say the launch constituted a disguised test of long-range missile technology banned under UN resolutions.

When have we ever known the North Koreans to be truthful to the United Nations? There's no way they were launching that rocket just for the purpose of putting a satellite into orbit. The North Koreans government officials are bitter, and their people are brainwashed; there is no way they'd let loose what their real purpose was for that rocket. Either way, they're treading on thin ice doing this kind of thing, as it just lets us all know that they're up to something. And, when the United Nations thinks there's potential danger to their countries' security, they will take action, sometimes not entirely thinking through the repercussions that could follow.

My science teacher knew from the beginning that it would fail. When it did, he said there was a chance that it was shot down by the U.S. He and everyone in the class wouldn't be suprised if it was truly shot down. IF it actually was shot down, North Korea probably won't figure it out until later.

But the chances of it being shot down are pretty slim. They did a horrible job making the rocket anyway.

Hardly. The United States still has nuclear launch bases still in operation from during the Cold War. No doubt Russia still has bases active to. When you have that kind of power, you don't just give it up. Sure, the missile pacts are helping relieve tensions, but you have to take into consider the fact that the United States and many other nations have underground operations going 24/7.

The government always has a hidden agenda that the public can't find out about, and the ones that do find out government secrets oddly commit suicide soon after.

It's sad for us to think that the USA is a good country, when it controls almost the entire world and kills hundreds of thousands of people in order to obtain natural resources, covering it up so well that the general public thinks anyone who negatively views the government is crazy.

North Korea is creating missiles, big woop. The USA and Russia have a machine that can cause Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Tornadoes, Volcano Eruption, etc... with the click of a button. Ever heard of HAARP? I'm thinking we should worry about that being abused to control the world's population, considering it looks as if it was just a natural disaster.

Or maybe we should worry about the government purposefully creating legislation to destroy our rights and turn it into a police state. According to new legislation, the government should be allowed to persecute someone for a crime when there's no proof they did it, as long as the government has suspicious of them being a "terrorist".

The government currently uses it under the guise that it is to monitor weather, but it's been proven to create waves in the earth that can cause earthquakes. Some people think it's what caused Japan, and Haiti's earthquakes.

I feel so bad for the people of North Korea. Their government wastes their money and then they starve. That's just screwed up... There was an agreement for financial aid for North Korea if they didn't launch that rocket. Now that they did, and it didn't work, their government must be feeling pretty silly... they wasted both opportunities.
