UPDATE 4/20: This song has officially hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. This is baffling.
To start, I hate this song to the fullest extent. I have no idea how this weird, medieval, beat-less song became so popular. Every time I try to argue my point about this song with somebody, they have either:
A) Never heard it.
B) Love it deeply and criticize my taste in music.
So, opinions?

I credit it's fame to how half the pop industry is gradually getting more tasteful. Very, very slowly. They're an indie band and the guest singer is also indie, so I'm happy to see indie bands who were just relatively unknown the other day getting recognition. Unlike the bands who don't deserve the recognition or get way too much than they're owed.
(Though the other half of the pop industry is becoming just absolute shrieking shit).

I'm not sure what you mean, OP. Seems to me that there IS a beat to the song.

In your opinion. I hate indie music, and I think if something "indie" becomes popular to normal people, it is no longer indie. And yes, i think these indie hipster people are not normal. However, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I like the song my self. I won't beat you to death with my thoughts though. I respect your opinion and it's pretty obvious that one song won't be liked by EVERYONE. I like Gotye singing it, and the cover that Walking off Earth did. I think that's their name. Glee did okay on it.

Wait, so if it's popular, it's not indie anymore? That's a pretty bold statement. Reading up on how Gotye records their music and how some of Wouter's first recordings were published (fifty copies, all with hand made artwork and lyrics), I would highly consider this project indie. Also, not all "hipsters" are indie. Hell, most "hipsters" aren't even hipsters at all. You're probably someone who thinks hipsters wear plaid, have big rimmed glasses without lenses and have some sense of self-entitlement.

I like it, haha. It's not a masterpiece, but it's nice to listen to. I can relate to the lyrics. I also like the melody. If you don't, that doesn't make it a bad song, that makes it a bad song to you.

When it first came out and make #1 in the charts I hated it. Listen to it a few more times and it seems to have grown on me. Starts off quite quiet but when it gets into the chorus the music gets better. The lyrics are also pretty good a have a lot of meaning to them. I think for me it's more about their voices that keeps me listening because it sure as hell isn't the tune but everyone likes different music.

Indie is short for independent. The term has become accepted as a genre of music separate from that, but indie artists just distribute their own music without a major record label. Indie music can also be pop music. Though it's rarer for indie artists with great commercial success to stay independent.
All three of Gotye's albums have been released unsigned, so he will always be indie unless he gets signed.

I can not stand this song. Mainly because it is overplayed. I think it is very weird and the video doesn't help it at all.

If you think about it, the video is symbolic. It's a simple meaning of painting yourself into someone's life and, when you don't care for them anymore, the paint is washed off. I got that on the first watch.

I like it but not love it. It is cool how it mixes new and older styles also has good lyrics

While I see what you mean, that doesn't make me like the song any more.

I used to like the song. It was good to see a talented guy finally getting some recognition.
HOWEVER, I've heard it so many times now it just grates on me. Can't stand it now!

I like any type of song, their are only a few exceptions so naturally I don't mind the song
I don't understand why they need to be naked and get painted on in the music video thats weird in my mind.
the thing I do like about it is that Kimbra comes from New Zealand, so she is my favourite part of the song.
