Does anyone else agree? Marching Band involves a ton of work, especially DCI. People think it's no big deal to parade around the football field playing music but it is no easy task!

I believe marching band is an activity. Not a sport. Its for the unathletic.

No, it's not. In fact, that statement is completely false. It's for those who choose to do it. They could be doing sports, maybe not, but it doesn't make them "unathletic"

Anyway, I don't know about it counting as a sport, but maybe as an activity which receives the same credit as one, if it doesn't now.

At the high school I graduated from it was considered a sport and also. many of the marching band members were athletic, I for one was caption of the soccer team and a squad leader in band...BAM

No, I wouldn't say it's a sport, cause you don't have to be particularly athletic to do it...

Honestly, i would love to see you march in formation for hours on end, I played soccer for years, I saw marching in formation for 6+ hours more painful than a 2-3 hour soccer practice.

Not to mention I probably bet you cannot play an instrument, count and stay in step all at the same time...sport, I think so, athletic, I think so.

Like Robert said, it is much harder than you'd expect.

sport:
An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others.

There really aren't any marching band competitions (correct me if I'm wrong), so that's really the only reason I don't consider it a "sport."

Alright, you don't need to be in top shape to do it, but that also applies to football! I know many football players that are large and not in muscle...

Don't laugh at me but I am going to use band camp as an example to disprove this...

the typical day of band camp of my college level marching band starts at 4 or 5 AM and consists of exercise, running, doing drills, marching, playing, more running, more exercise, then running part of the show. That takes us until about 12:30 or 1 in the morning. Then we sleep for 2 hours, get up and do it all over again! - I bet so many of you that disagree wouldn't do this...

Marching Band takes serious dedication and believe it or not you do need to be pretty athletic to do it. Sure you don't run around tackling the other school's horn line, but it's tough.

Let alone you have to play music and move at the same time! again... no easy task.

Our practices were tough, no doubt. But the hardest part I think is the length of time in the hot sun. I certainly think football practice is much harder though.

I agree...im the only bass trombonist of my school and carrying heavy instruments for hours in temperatures above 100 degrees...it is a sport in my world

No, it isn't a sport. A sport is an activity involving the throwing and grabbing of balls.

It is not a sport nor it will ever be an sport, but it is not easy to play an instrument on the move, or carry a bass drum for miles.

Oh, so track running isn't a sport? Volleyball isn't either, because you can't grab the ball.

I was once in band, playing trombone, and it requires equipment, there are events for it, and you can invest lots of money in it like a regular sport. So, yes. It is a sport.
