View Full Version : Moving a locked thread into a read-only forum

I'm just wondering what the purpose is of locking a thread before moving it into a read-only forum? If it is "read-only", then doesn't that mean people can't respond?

Honestly, either lock it or move it into the p101 archives, but I don't really see the need to do both.

Because it's generally a moderation notice of what the person did wrong to get their thread locked, or what had gone wrong in the thread. It serves it's purpose.

Lol, I think this thread should be locked since you received an accurate answer. (slightly ironic, but true)

Just as Mike said, it improves the person's post quality if they know what they did that got the thread locked as opposed to just moving the thread without being told.

I hope between Mike and I, you have an accurate answer. :)

Threads are also locked when the OP requests a lock as it may have answered their question, or when the staff feel that there is no need to continue the thread, so not always when something has gone wrong : )

lol I'm kinda laughing at this in a way, don't ask me why, I know I ain't right in the head. You lock it because the thread is against the rules and you lock it that way before you move it, no one else can respond to it. Because then if you didn't lock it and a couple people responded to the thread, you'd have to delete those posts, so long story boring, it helps the moderators get their job done in a timely fashion and decreases the chances of anything else being added to an already inappropriate discussion. Make sense?

True. Threads should only be locked if:

1) They're horribly off-course with absolutely no chance of being taken back on-course (assuming the moderators have tried to go back on-course with posts being moved elsewhere, etc)

2) There's too much bickering in the thread (once again, name-calling, etc. should be snuffed out ASAP before it gets too bad.)

3) Time sensitive threads that have run their course, such as a "2011 baseball thread" once the season ends.

In this sense, Dr. Obvious is wrong. Just because a question is answered doesn't mean it should be the end of that discussion. Quite frequently, you'll have other points which can rise up as a result of that question being answered.

I guess my original question still isn't entirely answered. A forum which is read-only means that no one can respond, right? If a thread is moved into that forum, it doesn't matter where it's moved FROM right?

Usually It's a sign that the thread has ran its course. :locked: means that for some reason the thread will not continue. I mean if you just saw the thread being moved into the p101 archive with words "this is inappropriate" some users might get prissy about it. I mean sure it might not sound like something you would do. But hey, Does it harm anyone? All it's for is a symbol of authority and to announce that the thread is for some reason against the rules or it's coming to an end. It's also good for moderation and appearance.

A more puzzling question than the one just asked would be....Why do you care? (sorry not meaning to sound rude, this is honest to god curiosity)

What you said above is why threads are locked, time sensitive. ect. but if you get a thread where 35 answers are the same and people are just saying the same thing over again. Why should it remain open? Also you are unaware if the OP has requested the lock as mods don't always state the reason for locking.

Overall the moderators do a good job and IMO this thread is complainig about something that No body cares about. I mean this has to be a first for me, seeing this thread, and I have been here for over a year. All I am saying is it's locked for a symbol. Also it can be down to habit as the p101 section is the only section that has a legitimate used archive.

Moving something into a read-only forum is like writing "DO NOT EAT CONTENTS" on a clear plastic box before putting it into a refrigerator marked "SCIENTIFIC SAMPLES ONLY - NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION."

I bet anything that if you keep the thread unlocked *gasp* and then move it into a read-only forum, people won't reply to it.

I'm struggling to understand why it's necessary to do both. Do we really think people will reply to a thread that's in a read-only forum?

If "No body" (gotta LOVE that totally awesome iPhone, right?) cares about the thread, why has it gotten so many responses? You go into a thread that you claim nobody cares about. You read many replies. You then respond. Please explain to me how "nobody" cares. By definition, YOU care. Therefore, you =/= nobody.

And you say you've been here for over a year with over 1300 posts? My advice, and it's just advice -- Enjoy the outdoors. Enjoy your friends. Step away for a bit.

You overestimate angry teenagers who want to get the last word.

Regardless of the fact that it doesn't do any harm, it's just to let everyone know why it was locked, and what should not be done again.

It isn't so mods can have a +1 post, trust me. (Though post count is virtually meaningless anyway, but that isn't the point).

Hey hey! Common sense!

Silver Assassin -- Are you a mod? I'm just wondering. You left me a note about how you "speak for the site", but if you ARE a mod, shouldn't your ID be bold like the two others I see here?

Gheez -- What started as an innocuous question... oy vey.

Why such hostility sportsfan? You asked...you got an answer

sportsfan, you've been rude and condescending throughout this thread. If this continues you are going to receive an infraction. If somebody opposes your suggestion, that doesn't give you the right to act that way.

This has turned into a stupid argument :locked:
