I cant figure this out for the life of me. Ive been working on the same problem for like an hour. :mad: so here's the problem.
Find the standard form of the equation of the hyperbola given that the foci are (-8,0) and (8,0) and the asymptotes are y=-4x and y=4x
Can any mathematically gifted people help me???

I'm bad at explaining, and I might be wrong, because it's been a long time since I did hyperbolas...I got some help from here (http://www.purplemath.com/modules/hyperbola3.htm)
if (-8,0) and (8,0) are the foci, then the center is at (0,0)
the slope is a/b = 4/1
a = 4, a^2 = 16
b = 1, b^2 = 1
so the equation would be
(x^2 / 16) - (y^2 / 1) = 1
I'm really sorry if this is the wrong answer. maybe someone who's a much better math expert than me can check this and/or give the right answer if I'm wrong @

In case you are wondering, on a computer, n^2 just means n squared, n^3 is n cubed, n^4 is n to the power of 4, and so on.
